I like "xfe" myself. It's right in PETGET on my older Debian Buster-based EasyOS, but was absent from PETGET (along with most other software I wanted) on the later OpenEmbedded-based EasyOS version I briefly tried.

I want to use xfe too, but I can not install xfe on easyos.
I think double commander is very similar to xfe.
Can you install xfe on easyos 5.7?

On the 2020 Debian Buster version of EasyOS, it's just a few mouseclicks in PETGET, just like a LOT of other software I need. This is why I love that Debian Buster version even though it's old. Huge software package library, and as I've said previously I get > 100 day uptimes even with hard use plus it's very fast on my ancient 2012 mid-range desktop PC, so I don't have a need to upgrade for now.

I think double commander is very similar to xfe.

It does look that way, yes! Good to know there's an xfe alternative available if/when I use later, non-Debian-based versions of EasyOS, thanks for the info!

I have no idea. You can probably compile it from source and see how that goes, hope the GUI works without having to go down some rabbit hole of modifications, but I didn't want to get into all that.

I'm hoping Barry will release a new Debian-based EasyOS, to presumably again have the huge Debian package count available. I liked the OpenEmbedded later version of EasyOS I tried, but the package repositories seemed quite bare, almost everything I wanted/needed wasn't in there.

If I recall right, he's made some comments about maybe doing another Debian-based EasyOS version in the future, but we'll see I guess!

And yes I know current EasyOS can do appimages and flatpaks, and I read that it can use Void Linux packages too, but I haven't used those formats and haven't looked into that yet; I've only used PETGET so far. Maybe see if xfe is available in one of those package formats for use in EasyOS 5.7?

XFE compiled in Easy 5.7

Post by Caramel »

First you need to compil the FOX toolkit (http://www.fox-toolkit.org/) with the source fox-1.6.57.tar.gz (page http://fox-toolkit.org/ftp/)
Then compilation of XFE https://sourceforge.net/projects/xfe/
Several hours for a slow machine.

libfox-1.6.57.pet (1.37 MB) and xfe-1.46.pet (2.36 MB) are available here :
https://www.swisstransfer.com/d/862a0e0 ... f453bc49d4

The libfox pet contains the required libraries for xfe (It's only a part of the fox tookit)

There is 4 executables in the xfe pet.
A file manager (xfe), a text editor (xfw), a sample image viewer for xfe (xfi) and a package manager (for rpm/deb) (xfp)
I left xfp in the pet but i removed the associated .desktop file so that there is no entry in the menu for it.

I had added the 3 config files in /root/.config/xfe (normally created after the first launch), so that they are deleted if the xfe pet is uninstalled.
And in the xferc config file i have desactived the warning that xfe has root rights (if launched as root) (In the xfe window, this warning option is available in the top menu, Edit -> Preferences , then tab Dialogs (I suppose, it's Dialogues in French). The option is at the end of the window)
