rtl8821ce drivers

Post by ozsouth »

NOTE 27Apr24: It appears kernel 5.15.150 onward will not support aufs (it broke & no-one will fix it). Older kernels are fine.
Some folk with rtl8821ce have reported that the 6.x rtw88 driver hangs their system (mine too). I made some special kernels without it.

I've made drivers for 64bit kernels, as the builtin rtw88-8821ce driver caused crashes, so left out of DOTconfig for kernels prior to 6.0.11.
Use at own risk. Note: Drivers are kernel-specific.

Older kernels:

Bionicpup64 (k4.19.23) - https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linu ... k41923.pet

Fossapup64 (k5.4.53) - https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linu ... 4k5453.pet

Seems some need an old-style driver for Fossapup64-9.6CE (k6.0.12-FP).
Is here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/0j4xrpv6 ... p.pet/file

Many drivers can be found here: https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linu ... iver_Repo/

My newer 32bit Drivers:

k5.10.189 here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/0uxxgcxl ... e.pet/file

.

My newer 64bit Drivers (unless specified, are aufs/overlayfs/non-usrmerge):

k6.1.101 : https://www.mediafire.com/file/nyj3jmte ... e.pet/file

k6.1.102 (overlayfs; hi-freq) : https://www.mediafire.com/file/6bitszp3 ... v.pet/file

k6.6.47 (usrmerge; overlayfs): https://www.mediafire.com/file/0t83vi8g ... v.pet/file

k6.6.42 (overlayfs; hi-freq) here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/c0avp7ms ... v.pet/file

k6.6.41 (hi-freq) here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/zca3h6so ... e.pet/file

Warning:
Compiled Drivers are kernel specific.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

I have a problem.
The downloaded file seems a compressed folder, in which i don't find whot i need.
First, it displays
"lib" folder, "pet.specs" and "pinstsll.sh"
Then a series of folders ending in
"8821ce.ko"
What must i do?
The kernel is the right 5.4.53

You don't need to unpack the file. If its name ends with .xz, rename it to rtl8821ce-fossa64k5453.pet then click on its icon in the file manager to install it.

@Marcolimuxx
what exact file are you downloading?

This one should be downloading as a pet package file.
https://www.mediafire.com/file/0tytxa9l ... 3.pet/file

I think you are selecting open with, when you try to get the pet package file.

You need to download the pet package file, by selecting save file, and saving it to a location on the computers drive.

All you do to install, is navigate in the Rox file manager, to location of the pet package file.
Left click on the file, to do the install.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Read my post again, carefully.
You do not need to rename anything.
You need to actually select to save the pet package file, when the browser download process asks what to do with it.
Note:
This window opened with open selected.
That is why the info statements talk about open.
Ignore them and select save file.

I am using Pale Moon browser, but all browsers download process will display a similar window, asking what you want to do with the download.

Here is the file downloaded to my downloads directory, after I selected save file, and told the browser to save it there.
I have that downloads directory set, in the browsers settings, as the place to download stuff to.
So, it automatically, goes to that directory, when I select save file.

Left click on the pet package file, to install what is in it, into the operating file system.

Does anyone have one for 4.19.164 (Slacko 7.0; 64bit)? Can't seem to find it.

@ICBM - sorry, I only just saw this. I will download slacko 7, devx & sources & try to make a driver in a few hours time. A belated 'Welcome to the Kennels'.

LATER: Done! See 1st post. I do recommend a later kernel though & have made a 7.0a iso (see post re- slacko 7 wireless drivers in Slacko section of forum).

@ozsouth

I am currently using VoidPup64 with kernel 6.6.51.

The existing fdrv contains the drivers to activate the wifi chipset.

As this is the only driver needed by me, I did want to extract the driver files and just add them to my 'save' to spare up some RAM.

I have done this on FossaPup95 and also JammyPup64.

For some reason, I just cannot seem to accomplish the same for this OS.

I have tried the copying the files over into different directories and have no success.

Any tips/suggestions?

@Jasper - tricky one. I would try copying over the full rtw88 folder to see if that helps. Firmware possibly an issue too.

@ozsouth

Thanks for the suggestion

I did try this and copy over some additional files............. still no success so far.

TBH I think I need to write down the different combinations of files etc that I have tried so far
