If you use Rufus to flash your USB, you might want to try its 'Persistent' option...

Or, resize it to make another free space (partition) using gParted after Rufus...

Thank you for your reply but I only use Linux antiX. The 64GB usb stick is gobbled up by cd image which, as you may know makes the whole drive partitionless so whether it was gpt or mbr seems not to matter. Furthermore as it is not partitioned it is not possible to shrink or create an additional partition and that's the catch. By the way I use gparted and the antiX usb maker or dd.

puppy is best installed as a frugal install rather than a cd image,

look here for a specific tutorial that fits your hardware and install needs

I presume you can boot into antiX and still have a USB port available for creating a new puppy USB?
If in antiX, use gparted to set up your USB the same as any other disk you would use for linux.
dd is not suitable for creating a puppy. Dunno about the antix tool, but you can also do a manual frugal install. you will also need a bootloader

puppys have installers for bootloaders, but if you only have the one USB which you plan to repartition, you will have to download an installer to your antiX

may help

Many thanks for your response, which I am working on.
The idea I have is to use the 64GB usb stick totally independently of any hard disk and still work in ram. Thereby I could confidentially plug in the usb stick into any machine and still have ample space for saving, as many people would be apprehensive of allowing someone to potentially"mess up their machine".

A quicker method: See here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 85#p102085

That post assumed you were familiar with how to do a "manual" deployment. If not, see here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 1788#p1788

Do you know how to get the USB stick back to a normal partition, format setup?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o
