I can't think of any recent pup I had this problem. I run latest voidpup, s15pup, jammypup32, fp96CE_4, quickpup64 etc. - they use the i915 intel driver which is good enough for me (do not want to bother with nvidia driver).

If I run bookwormpup32/64 without ext. monitor all is well.

Since bookwormpups use overlay, which kernel do you recommend?

Maybe try dropping out to terminal - run xorgwizard and select a different driver - intel or i915..........??

You do need a "usrmerge" kernel for BookwormPup - any of the ones at:
https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... el-kit.yml

would do but they will boot as aufs unless you put punionfs=overlay in the boot stanza.

or maybe a usrmerge kernel from @ozsouth from:

You can find Debian-based kernels in https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... kernel.yml, currently it has the Debian 11, Debian 12, Debian testing (what will eventually become Debian 13, 6.5.13) and Debian unstable (6.5.13, soon 6.6.x) kernels rebuilt for use in Puppy without patches like aufs.

EDIT: the kernels based on Debian>12 are currently x86_64 only, because Debian might drop x86 kernels before Debian 13 (see https://www.phoronix.com/news/Debian-Plans-Cease-i386)

BookwormPup32 already has the Debian-Bookworm kernel so using another one probably wouldn't change @one's problem.

The Bullseye kernel is 5.10.x and @one says things worked fine with various Puppy releases that use 5.10.x.

thanks for your response.

Via the link to @ozsouth 's kernel creations I did not find a 32 bit_overlay-usrmerge_kernel - so I limited the test to BookwormPup64.

I took 5.10.174-64oz-ao-um and 5.15.131-64oz-ao-um and both boot fine up to the desktop - but show the same behavior as the original kernel 6.1.55. All boot with the "modesetting" driver ...

What works is to use xorgwizard and specify video driver intel (nv/nvidia does not work)- then you can adjust the monitor settings so that in the end the correct resolution is used on the external monitor (tray at the bottom of the screen and drive icons visible).

The same - without changing the kernel - I did with BookwormPup32 and got it to work.

This kind of solved the issue for me ...

I notice that in the Monitor Settings the second monitor is "right" positioned to the first one |3046x1050| (instead of "default", which means the first screen is cloned on the second). It is simply not possible to correct that because no confirmation dialog is appearing. Only after running xorgwizard this setting is automatically corrected to "default" and you can adjust the settings. Is there a "development setting" left in the iso?

Looks good so far, however "Synapse update" in the Filesystem menu is not functional since none of the plocate components is installed
Relates also to the dysfunctional autostart file /etc/xdg/autostart/plocate-update.desktop

I thought appimages were all 64-bit apps?? If so they won't work on a 32-bit distro.....

Attaching the library below, compiled from source (downloaded from Videolan, the VLC developers).
Split-off DEV package is only needed if you will be compiling anything which depends on this library.
I presume this will be addressed later in Woof-CE or the specific Bookworm build recipes (others will decide the best way to approach this I guess), but for now this should offer a fix.

Compiled from source with --disable-tdb these small libcanberra .pet packages should prevent creation and accumulation of /root/.cache/event-sound-cache.tdb cache files.

I now have BookwormPup32 booting directly to the desktop.

What I did:
Boot with "pfix=nox"
Run "xorgwizard" to specify "intel" as the driver, and start X.
Using desktop, reboot, creating a savefolder, (thus saving the modified '/etc/X11/xorg.conf').
Remove "pfix=nox" boot parameter.
Boot directly to desktop.

thanks gyrog, i was booting to a blank screen when trying latest release BookwormPup32-23.12-240223.iso and your exact procedure worked for my intel Xeon E3-1200 [8086:0412] graphics card!
system is now using the i915 after specifying "intel" (without the quotes)

Getting BookwormPup32 23.12 to work on my old IBM X41 32 bit laptop

I downloaded the BookwormPup32 23.12 iso, modified the X41's menu.lst file
(see below) and booted it up:

When I tried the WIFI, "Conman Settings" did not show any WIFI device(s) nor
list any routers.
I found from the "Hardinfo utility" that my IBM X41 had a Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] adapter
and it was missing firmware (dmesg | grep irmware).

I copied over the 2200BG's firmware from "friendly-bionic32" which
was running O.K. on the same X41 PC.
(I copied: ipw2200-bss.fw, ipw2200-ibss.fw, ipw2200-sniffer.fw and
LICENSE.ipw2200-fw files to /usr/lib/firmware )

I next tried to use the older Puppy WIFI software (instead of Conman):
There is an entry in Menu > Network > "Internet connection switcher"
which wanted a reboot to enable "sns, frisbee or network wizzard".
I rebooted but I didn't notice any changes in the menus.
So, I opened a terminal and typed "frisbee" and the normal frisbee
window opened displaying my familiar neighborhood WIFI names.
I picked mine own and frisbee asked for the "public Key" and then the
eth1 ip address was shown (ping ibm.com now worked.)

I started up the default browser: "light" and surfed the web !

This forum post is being entered by BookwormPup32 23.12 iso and it's light browser.

Are there any comments or suggestions about my clumsy start ?

Have the slightly older Thinkpad T41 with about the same specs. If you want to try another browser, Palemoon works well and you can even use Ublock Origin with it.

Also, you might try Friendly-Jammy32 which takes less horsepower than BW32: viewtopic.php?t=9972
