"Eagle" CAD from Autodesk - in 'portable' format - 64-bit only

Post by mikewalsh »

Right, gang.

Here's another interesting one for y'all.

I was reading one of Glen Ellis's posts earlier on, in which he mentions several of the apps he runs in SFS format. He mentioned this one, which I'd never heard of:-

Eagle CAD from Autodesk. Current release is v9.6.2.

I was intrigued, so I investigated. Appears to be along the same lines as LTSpice - all to do with electronics schematics & simulation testing.....except this one runs natively under Linux, instead of needing WINE to enable functionality. Autodesk are, of course, one of the biggest global names in the entire CAD industry, and the professionalism shows.

I occasionally play around with some of the basics in this area, so I shall be giving this one a try-out. It's self-contained in a single directory, and fired straight up under Fossapup64, so was a prime candidate for the 'portable' treatment.

It runs very sweetly, too. Oh; be warned......this is a BIG application (currently almost 550 MB when unzipped, though no worse than some others, for all that). You also need to create an Autodesk a/c if you want to use this, 'cos you have to log-in right at the beginning.....it won't run until you do.

Also runs OK under Bionicpup64. Strangely, it won't fire-up under KLV 'Airedale' (which is even newer than Fossapup.) Says it "Can't initialize GLX". I wonder if it's anything to do with GPU drivers; Bionic/Fossa are both running the proprietary Nvidia driver.....KLV isn't. Oh, well; ya can't win 'em all.

Tahrpup64/Xenialpup64 are simply too old. Segfault & crash during log-in....

---------------------------------------------

The download can be found here:- https://mega.nz/folder/LOgVDahA#fBwQyz-er_iwzbRscN8_wA

As always - download; unzip; move the resulting portable directory anywhere you like, though preferably outside the 'save'. Click to enter, click 'LAUNCH' to fire it up purely as a portable. If you want a wee bit more system integration, scripts permit addition or removal of a Menu entry from wherever you've located it.....to save having to bring the portable directory up every time.

Hope some of you may find this useful. Enjoy.

Mike. ;)

Hell. Sorry about that, Phil; I completely forgot to post the download link!

Now added to post #1. Thanks for the "heads-up".

Cheers Mike, I'll down load it and give it a go.
Whats I'm after is an electronic schematic editor, I have been using Geda but it's getting a bit long in the tooth now. I tried downloading the latest component libraries but Firefox says 'file not downloaded, possible security risk'

You could always give LTSpice a look. It does need WINE to run - it's Windoze-only - but it IS fully-functional.

https://www.analog.com/en/design-center ... lator.html

Even running WINE to get this going uses far less RAM than Eagle AutoCAD. The latter is very powerful, but it does use a shed-load of resources.

Just a suggestion, like. Entirely your call...

Thanks for that info Mike, I've downloaded LTSpice and it runs ok in Bionic64.
Haven't had time to play with it yet but it looks useful.
incidentally I cannot get your Eagle CAD Portable to run in Bionic but it runs ok in Fossa. which is the OS I usually use.

hi Mike, is this version trial? How is it possible to use this software after trial expiration?
