Google Chrome and Firefox do not support usb gps dongles anymore, although at one time they did. Google earth seems to support it as standard serial on ttyS0 (com 1??) but that's not where usb gps dongles are. (see link)
Gpsd is the linux library that supports gps and it works and will support linux programs like Viking. The "gpsd-client" package has way too many dependencies, but you don't really need it.
