Curious - has anybody been sucessful in installing HPLIP in EasyOS Dunfell? If so, how? Did you have to compile it from source?
I have an old HP Deskjet 3050a that I have used over several generations of puppy/quirky/easyOS Buster. The preinstalled Gutenprint drivers usually do not work with it but HPLIP typically works

The same problem is in the latest Dunfell 2.8.1 and it seems no one has been able to fix it so far for the HP printer!. Some of the other printers that had the same no-print problem have been fixed if you read through the posts here.
As good as any program is, for most, it's not much good if you can't use your printer! I mostly use the 'Buster' version of EasyOS, no printer problems there. I have the same printer 3050a you do, love it!

this page might help you, apparently the printer isn't in the default set as it's not certified as tested, but was supplied from other parties.

and,
hplip_3.20.3+dfsgO
both have the 3050a-611 drivers needed to install the printer, and... if you use a completly FRESH - yes FRESH - (with no other hplip's installed) of either hplip's mentioned above in the latest Dunsfell, (plus the one file in the Package Manager that is 'Required' for Dunsfell printing) the HP printer prints a beautiful 'Test Page' and documents loaded into leafpad and geany will print out properly also.
The 'Scan' function 'xsane' works as it should too.
Now where the problem comes in is with a 'reboot' that kills the printer function and a 'failed filter' shows when you try to print 'anything' and cups is checked. The Scan function with either hplip's continue to work as they should without a problem but, NO MORE PRINTING!
I do believe the problem is in either cups or Dunsfell itself and not printer drivers (at least not the ones I used above).

@sszindian Here is a quick test for hplip. Open a terminal and run: /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups
If the hpcups filter is installed correctly, you will probably get a "51:ERROR" message (because the filter is not designed to run from the command line).
If it is NOT installed correctly, you will get a "libxxx not found" error.

If your system will show a warning in /tmp/var/log/cups error_log 'pstoraster not found'
you'll have do add a link from gstoraster to pstoraster in /usr/lib/cups/filter.

or there are other more specific info to supplement the generic "filter failure" errror
as I recall, this pstoraster error was something to do with more recent versions of ghostscript rather than the driver its self.
At any rate, posting the tail end of the log might give some insight .

The exact error does not matter. It indicates that the filter is working and has all the required dependencies. If printing fails, the problem is somewhere else in the CUPS job stream.

Upgraded Easy OS Dunfell
HPLIP is installed out of the box. Added a printer via the CUPS interface and my HP 3050a All-in one printer works without a hitch.
The flip side is that now the scanner doesn't work. Xsane cannot find the scanner.
When running HP-scan from the command line I get an error message stating that scanning options were not included in the HP build.
So... if I use the old tarpup HPLIP pet the scanner works but not the printer.
Now with HPLIP 3.19 compiled in Easy the printer works but not the scanner.
It's still a great leap forward. Personally I use the printer more than the scanner anyhow. And it's not reasonable to be able to make EasyOS natively support every brand and model of printer/scanner out there.
I have an analog problem with my new printer HP Color Laser 150a and I also am searching for an really easy way to set it up "on the fly" in Puppy's as I use a lot of different computers and a lot of different Puppy's directly from ISO without some installation 
Note, EasyOS 2.8.3 has HPLIP builtin. Not yet tested.
HP3050a-J611 printer test in Dunsfell64 2.8.3 -

A: Printer prints a TEST page in CUPS 'perfect'
B: Printer prints documents from GEANY text editor and
also in LEAFPAD 'perfect'
C: xsane scanner works 'perfect'

Try this EXACTLY AS WRITTEN Please>
Turn everything off (computer and printer)
Turn printer on and wait for it to do it's complete startup routine before proceeding further
Only Then startup the computer
1> Go into cups and see if it recognises that there is the hp deskjet there by showing it is still listed there from last time and that is shows that it's idle
>if so send a test page from cups
> shutdown the computer (not the printer), start it up again and test printing from both cups and your package
> if that works, it means it's one of the printers that doesn't EXTERNALLY connect until the last stage of it's startup routine, and you'll have to ensure the printer has done it's routine before starting your computer. Early deskjets all worked this way and a few odd ones later also did for some reason.
OR if it hasn't worked,
2> If the HP Deskjet is NOT listed in cups try creating it and see if it will actually let you print a test Page FROM CUPS (before restarting from the top of this page)
OR,

In ALL cases please report it back to us, there are a few other things that can be checked and tried.
Cups is good, but a very complicated package and sometimes it stuffs itself up.
I don't understand this discussion. If the new Easy OS has HPLIP built-in, why is @sszindian installing other HPLIP packages and reporting problems with them?

Here are results from the 'BUILT IN HPLIP'
'Failed Filter'
On the 'OTHER HPLIP's' I mention, I didn't say there were problems with them, in fact they print test pages and documents 'PERFECT' on 'INITIAL SETUP' in EasyOS Dunfell... however, after an EASYOS Dunfell Re-boot the other HPLIP's give the same results as the 'BUILT IN HPLIP'... 'Failed Filter'. Is That Understandable? I don't know how else to explain it to you!
Easy Dunfell 'IS NOT' my regular operating system... I only test Barry's creations to help him find any problems and try to help him get it working as it should.

Was this on the first run or after a reboot?
It sounds to me like your problem is not with the HPLIP driver per se, but with how your system retains the driver's setup.
Airdale above does not appear to have this problem.
Failed Filter with HPLIP built-in is on first run, initial setup. And of course on any run thereafter.
Airdale appears to have only scanner problems now, claims printer works fine, didn't say if that 'work' was on a reboot also?
Drivers setup? I use several puppy OS's and I do NOT have a printer issue with any of them and they all use the 3050a hp!

Just out of curiosity, does the built-in driver pass the "hpcups" test for you?
When the other drivers fail on reboot, is the CUPS daemon running? Test with: /etc/init.d/cups status
Initial Status of Cups on Startup = Idle
Tried to print a test page= State = stopped Failed Filter
Then I = Canceled Job
Restarted Cups, Status= Idle - "FilterFailed"
/etc/init.d/cups status
cups: scheduler is running
(Not sure if this is the Cups test you want?)
I might add, scanner continues to work as it should at any point, whenever it's tested.

This is a mystery. If you want to keep working on it, you can do the following:
1. Open the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
2. Change "loglevel info" to "loglevel debug"
3. Run: /etc/init.d/cups restart
4. Run a print test.
5. Locate the file /var/log/cups/error_log
6. Zip it and post it as an attachment.

Yes, mystery to say the least and, I want to thank you for your input here! If it's a mystery to you with your knowledge about printers, I'm certainly not going to attempt a fix, it's way beyond what I wanted to get involved with by simply testing something, I believe its time to let the developers figure it out?

So... just to wrap things up.
Like sszIndian.... when I tried to use the old Tarpup HPLIP pet to set up my printer - the scanner worked, but not the printer. Sometimes it would work once or twice intermittently, but never consistently. After a reboot it would never work. Pretty much exactly the same problem.
However, when Barry incorporated HPLIP into Dunfell 2.8.3, it fixed the problem beautifully. My printer has worked without a hitch since.
The only problem was that I don't believe that Barry included the scan portion in his HPLIP build... so xsane would not recognize the scanner. When using hp-scan from the command line I got an error message saying that the scan functionality was not included in the build.
I got around this by installing Hamrick's Vuescan. Not a perfect solution... requires a paid software rather than the free open source xsane. But a good compromise.
I now can print and scan BOTH for the first time on Easy Dunfell! Thanks y'all for all the assistance and help.
