EasyOS 2.5.3 released

Post by BarryK »

Yes, another one!

The big news, relative to 2.5.1, are the four ways to transfer files to and from a phone. See blog announcement, with d/l link:

https://bkhome.org/news/202012/easyos-v ... eased.html

See the release notes to find out all changes since 2.5.1:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/easyos/amd64/ ... -2.5.3.htm

You can also browse the EasyOS-related blog posts:

Also, you might find my response to this browsing-security thread to be interesting:

I think the LTS Kernel 5.10 is only used in the Dunfell version. https://bkhome.org/news/tag_easy.html. Link to kernel from that post.

Edit: Just found peebee's post here, viewtopic.php?p=13033#p13033. Caution: I don't know if EasyOS is as amenable to kernels swaps as Puppies. And note that peebee indicates that fdrv(.sfs) is required. Puppies will automatically copy an fdrv.sfs into RAM on bootup if the fdrv has the name of the Puppy version, e.g. fdrv_busterpup64_8.0.0.sfs. It may be necessary to rebuild the easyos.sfs to include the files contained in a fdrv.sfs or to specifically load it (if that's possible) and I don't know if either method would (a) be effective or (b) break EasyOS.

EasyOS Dunfell-series with 5.10.2 kernel is expected to be out by xmas. I think. Will announce it on my blog:

https://bkhome.org/news/

I announced the 5.10.2 kernel compile yesterday:

https://bkhome.org/news/202012/kernel-5 ... nfell.html

It is easy to change the kernel in EasyOS. For example, if you have written the .img file to a usb-stick and booted from that, you will see that the usb-stick has two partitions, a fat32 esp boot-partition, and a ext4 working-partition.

Copy the new kernel 'vmlinuz' file to replace the one in the boot-partition, and copy the new kernel drivers to /lib/modules/<kernel version>.

That's it, just reboot.

Good idea to rename the previous 'vmlinuz', so it is easy to go back. In the boot-partition, just rename the old vmlinuz back to 'vmlinuz', then reboot.

You can even do it while running some other distro:

Plug in the EasyOS usb-stick, copy the new 'vmlinuz' to the boot-partition, and copy the new kernel drivers to /easyos/.session/lib/modules/<kernel version> in the working-partition. Then boot from the usb-stick.

I downloaded them all, but how do I compile the kernel? I don't understand. There is no pet or menu inside. I try to run the script, but it always prompts an error. I haven't compiled the kernel. What should I do after downloading all the files? I am a debian buster puppy

I'm curious to ask a couple questions: will there be a port of BluePup for Puppy distros such as FossaPup? If not that's fine.
Also, didn't you mention that there will be a RPi port of Easy OS? I kinda want to try it on my Raspberry Pi 4. :geek:

BluePup has had very positive feedback so far. And yes, it could be ported to FossaPup or another Puppy.

There is a web page for BluePup:

https://easyos.org/apps/bluepup-easy-bl ... ement.html

EasyOS is an ALSA-based system, with apulse and bluezalsa packages instead of pulseaudio. Someone would have to work out the details of porting it. In EasyOS the code is at /usr/local/bluepup. The person doing the porting would also have to look at some of scripts in /etc/init.d
Also, EasyOS has a special /usr/sbin/mscw (Multiple Sound Card Wizard).

Note, I did build some compatibility into BluePup and mscw for pulseaudio, but that was only a brief experiment.

Yes, it would be a great project for someone with shell scripting skills.

RPi4... that's one thing that I think about, haven't got around to doing it.
