This differs from usual pups by being more modular, sort of a two pups in one. Rather than just the main puppy.sfs and zdrv.sfs (kernel) there's also the puppys fdrv & adrv utility. So say for instance you just want a bare bones system, you can remove the adrv and get a small 180mb puppy. it can go even smaller if you use tahrpups firmware in the fdrv to something nearing 150mb. You could even compile a new smaller kernel for the zdrv and go even smaller.

what the different drvs.sfs give you: .....

puppy_fossapup64_9.5.sfs 97mb
a basic system that boots to desktop. no dri drivers, no apps apart from dillo, urxvt & leafpad

adrv_fossapup_9.5.sfs 229mb
this will give you a regular puppy, abiword, mtpaint palemoon etc

fdrv_fossapup64_9.5.sfs 40mb
this is the firmware separated from the kernel and is easy to edit and change

zdrv_fossapup64_9.5.sfs 27mb
this is the kernel and can easily be changed with change_kernels

note that the puppy.sfs requires a zdrv.sfs & fdrv.sfs, the adrv requires the puppy.sfs,zdrv.sfs & fdrv.sfs.

Deleted A sfs and wow what a trimmed down Pup added what I needed - no problems thus far on a machine with 1 gig ram.

I have installed this release to my Dell Optiplex 760 USFF with 3.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (E8400), 4Gb RAM to HDD. I included the ADRV in this setup.

The flashing window issue that I experienced in the previous releases is present in RC1. I noticed that the picom app is missing from the menu so I edited the file in /root/.config/picom/ and that has worked.

In the previous release when I installed inxi 3.0 from Ubuntu repos inxi would complain that python deps were not installed. They are installed as part of the original build. Re installing python from package manager would "fix" this problem. However, in RC1 the program complains

I booted into a pristine setup. This time I installed inxi 2.3.8 from puppy noarch. It worked fine. I also installed a favorite KDE game (kshisen) as I did with the last setup. At this point the package manager is working as it should.

An update to my first post above. The flashing of the window manager and applications occurs when changing icon sets in JWM Desk Manager. Initially I changed the mouse pointer to default. I like the low profile black pointer. No problem there. I then elected to change the icon set to Moka. Applying that change resulted in the window flashing. Editing the picom config file resolved the issue immediately. This appears to be somewhat different from my previous experience as I do not recall the flashing being associated with changes made from the desk manager.

missing apps from last iso back in, pburn, pclock, inkscapelite, etc
bluezalsa added. bluetooth now works for me, both speakers and bluetooth tethering to a phone.
janky_BT had a mini update, now has a volume control and also normal system sounds should work after disconnecting speaker.
JWMdesk updated to add new conky,picom & dunst GUIs
URXVT transparency .... turn on/off in JWMdesk>>>window effects.
no_csd (no client side display) adds the title bar back for gnome apps like evince, gedit etc.
tweaked firewall icons so look better on dark taskbar.
Xlock .... thought it was fixed but just discovered that it needs a further tweak. will update through quickpet

One bug i can't figure out is the default repositories in the PPM .the fossapup repo is missing until you add it in the PPM settings.

installing the devx should make inxi work

From my view aesthetically complete, and nice look (new icons in rox and that...)

I find a lot missing full install (why?), usually I manage more data that delay closing with savefiles.

From many years I don't need compatibility with any other S.O. diferent of puppylinux.
In fact for a long time used ext4 with NO swapfiles space.
Is there any script to make a complete install to my HD drives?
My experience in hardware pc clutter has no problem. Software so...

Posting fron fossapup64-9.0.4-rc2, but as in previous fossas, could only get networking via my TP-Link USB dongle by switching to another kernel (ozsouth's 5.6.18) and replacing fossa's frdv with one just having the firmware needed for the dongle (ath9k_htc).

I'll try another kernel, when I can, as a cross-check.

And with the original fossa frdv to see which 'drv' is giving my system (old HP small-form desktop) this on-going failure with the fossas (frdv or zdrv?).

Bionic and other recent Ubuntu Pups (and ScPups) have not had this networking failure with my USB wifi adapter.

So I'm puzzled.

If I replace the old v.9.0.3-sfs'es with the new v.9.0.4-sfs'es fossapup tries to load the old 9.0.3-sfs'es (now named xxx9.0.4.sfs) and fails of course. How can I change this? Should I simply rename the new ones to xxx9.0.3.sfs?
Or do a new install and use old savefolder?

the fdrv.sfs contains the firmware and the zdrv.sfs is the kernel & as far as i can tell ath9k_htc firmware and drivers are there

one thing to try is to create the file /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k_htc.conf

Thanks for your reply to my post re fossapup64s not connecting unless I change the fdrv, zdrv & vmlinuz (ie to a different kernel to its supplied 5.4.47).

With the working 5.6.18 kernel, I restored the original fossapup64's fdrv and the network connection was still good (using the same save-file as at start-up in all my tests). So it's not the firmware giving me my no-networking problem in the 64-bit fossas.

I have now tried kernels:
5.6.18 (ozsouth) = works
5.7.9-lxpup = works
4.6.18 lxpup = works
and then back to original 5.4.47 which still fails to show wlan0 using any wizard, so no printing, no scanning and no internet .

I should look to see if there's another huge-kernel version of 5.4.47 somewhere?

And I'll later re-boot to fossapup64 in its original state and try your suggestions in your last post. And repeat with a working kernel in fossa if that would help sort out what's wrong with my set-up??

I'm enjoing with satisfaction Scpup64 on my hardware. I tried fossapup64 on the same hardware and it's quite unresponsive and unusable. Fossapup64 is the first puplet I can't use on my hardware. On my hardware I can even run fatdog64. I think that fossapup64 is quite unfit for old hardware. My specs:

yes those specs are too low for fossapup64. the minimum suggested requirements will be core2duo & 2gb ram.
runs nicely on a 2007 vista ready laptop but anything from the XP era (especially single core) will struggle with this fossa.

maybe give peebees a try viewtopic.php?f=33&t=63

or try removing the adrv.sfs

I done a bit more trial&erroring with fossa and its non-networking for my wlan0 adapter.

I tried your script for the /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf file and it had no effect in allowing wifi networking. The original fossa config script was the same as in other working Pups and the edited version worked in other Pups, just not in Fossa64.

text in /etc/modprobe.d/ config file:
in a working Slacko64:
options ath9k nohwcrypt=1

in a working Bionic64 as per posted advice:
options ath9k_htc use_dev_fw=1

in a non-working Fossa (2 versions tried & failed):
options ath9k nohwcrypt=1
options ath9k_htc use_dev_fw=1

result seems to be this config script, either version, has no effect on networking

I next looked at the Puppy SysInformation for some Pups, particularly the Drivers as it seems mine is a driver problem in Fossa, the firmware looking OK.

Screenshots have ath9k drivers listed and only difference is ath9k_htc lists 1 user in the failing Fossa but 0 users in new-kernel-working Fossa and another Pup. I have no idea what this means.

I could not find another huge-kernel for 5.4.47 other than yours but switched the fossa-supplied kernel with a fresh download of the archived huge-kernel-5.4.47 and still had no networking.
I then tried the 5.4.47 kernel in a BionicPup64-8.0 which had networking with its original 4.something kernel and several other kernels I tested it with. The 5.4.47 kernel saw this BionicPup64 also lose its wifi when network wizards were run to get a wifi connection.

So it is something in the zdrv or vmlinuz of fossa's 5.4.47 kernel that wont work with my wifi dongle and wont work in another Pup. Change the kernel and all is networking OK again.

Posting from fossapup64-9.0.4 with a 5.7.9-lxpup64 kernel.

Happy to try anything else to explain my problem in Fossa.
