Yes and no. I just started a qemu vm and opened the file manager. There is a browser network function but it can't find any samba shares on the LAN. So, I conclude that samba browsing isn't functional. Can it still connect to a samba share, if you know the share's address? I think so. Type smb://10.0.2.4/qemu in file manager's navigation bar and a password entry dialog pops up. Enter no password, press OK for an anonymous login and... success! The host's filesystem opens. That 10.0.2.4 is the qemu builtin share. What about a real share on a real network node? This works: 1) start samba service on the host (I use fatdog); 2) type smb://10.0.2.2 in the guest's file manager's navigation bar... success! It shows fatdog's shares. Click a share, answer the password prompt, anonymous login, all working. Final test: can it connect to a samba share that isn't on the host? I don't know. I tried connecting to my home router's share but it didn't work. I didn't investigate why.

Edit: I also didn't test whether QuickPup can share its folders as a samba server but I see that @mistfire has already addressed this point in the post below.

Yes it is, QuickPup has samba.

To manage samba, go to Applications>Simple File Sharing Setup or go to Applications>gadmin-samba.

To share a folder on samba. Just right click the folder on file manager then select SHARE THIS FOLDER

Hi,

Just curious, do you plan to add combability for the Kohjinsha PM UMPC? You had asked if it would work on a device of mine a short while ago in another thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2082

Thanks :)

Actually the minimum ram required for QuickPup was 1Gb. However, I made some revisions on initrd in order to work at low ram for at least 512Mb. You can try the latest QuickPup on Kohjinsha UMPC. In case of hang, just swap the kernel and zdrv file to older one (don't forget to rename the zdrv file to zdrv_quickpup_20.06.sfs)

Hi mistfire,

i did a quick test of your latest quickpup_20.6.11. Frugal install on usb stick/FAT32/g4dos. Booted well - but no eth0-autoconnect.
Tray says "networkmanager is not running". I tried SNS and network wizard, but no success. Then I used frisbee and restarted DHCP --> eth0 connected.

I created a savefolder - connection is not saved.

Hello

Could you please run again QuickPup without save file loaded on your computer?

If nm-applet-tray shows that NetworkManager is not running, then run these command on terminal

Code: Select all

#networkdisconnect
#network_default_connect

Then post the output terminal here on this forum.

Hi Mistfire,

thank you for your reply.

Pristine boot, here's the output from terminal:

Code: Select all

# networkdisconnect
Stopping NetworkManager: stopped
#
# network_default_connect
route: SIOCADDRT: File exists
Starting NetworkManager daemon: /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
/usr/sbin/network_default_connect: line 97: 11022 Bus error XDG_CACHE_HOME=/root/.cache $NM_BIN
#

That's weird it threw bus error on your computer. Try to boot QuickPup in pristine boot then do this again on terminal.

Code: Select all

#networkdisconnect
#network_default_connect

Now this time upload the /var/log/messages file here on this thread. And also run this command on terminal

Code: Select all

#dmesg

Then post the output terminal here.

Thanks

According to the logs you sent to me. The SFS modules of QuickPup was corrupted. Did you check if the checksum of the QuickPup that you downloaded was matched with the given checksum?

Hi mistfire,

you're right!

Holy moly, I would have sworn that I "always" check my downloads - but obviously not in this case (I kept my install_iso and could check it). So I downloaded 20.06.11 again, did a new frugal install and problem solved - eth0 connected automatic.

I saw the SQUASHFS errors but sheepish assumed the fault on your side.
Thank you and sorry for stealing your time!

Hi,

I have not tried QuickPup again yet, but before I do, are there touchscreen drivers?

Thanks

Tested latest 20.06.11, same as last test of QuickPup in this thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2082 - it gets to "Setting up services (network" then nothing happens.

Try to swap kernel and zdrv file using older kernel files from other puppies. Don't forget to rename the donor zdrv as zdrv_quickpup_20.06.sfs

I don't think it was an issue with specs but more an issue with download speed from google drive. I did try again and this time download speed was a bit faster so I went and had a coffee and came back to see the last of it download. I have QuickPup 20.6 installed but had not updated for a while. Anyway 21.00 now installed and I'm posting from it now. Have not done much but have noticed that wifi does not auto-connect on reboot. I had the feeling that this had been made the default from one of the updates to v20.6. I think I have a post on this previously in the thread. I'll have a look for it.

Edit: Found the link outlining how to get wifi to auto-connect on boot up so that's now working. However. I see that OS is now updated to 21.01. I made a new save folder with v21.00. I take it if I now update to v21.01 I should make another fresh save folder. If this is the case and given the time it has taken to download the 21.00 iso I think I'll leave this for a while before I try to download the most up to date version.

Have now downloaded and installed v2101 with new save folder. Set up wifi auto-connect. Using portable palemoon 29 and portable iron as browsers so did not install adrv. Good to be able to do this. Posting from palemoon know. Still don't know what the issue was with downloading yesterday but it went better today. So far all seems fine.

Regarding downloads you talked about, it might be your ISP having problems on accessing google servers.

Hi @mistfire
Finally...
Fresh new install, running smooth, consistent, eth0 network finally connects automatically

As always, I like to install my own packages for testing, such as pcmanfm 1.3.1, PPM 2.5 fixed, dark themes and testing my new Xrandr's Screen Adjuster 1.6, all of the above work without any problem ...

This version showed me that it can be improved with patience, passion for what you do and the comments that we all make with the intention of improving this system

Congratulations
