PAV Control reports headphone "unplugged" even though it is plugged in

Post by vtpup »

If I plug my headphone into the jack on my Acer Aspire 5349-2635 laptop using Bookworm Dpup 10.0.2b, Pulse Audio Volume Control nevertheless claims the Headphone device is "unplugged" and so never allows audio through it.

Example: attempting to play an mp3 with speaker muted, and with headphone plugged in, headphone selected in PAV Control and headphone volume slider at 100% (definitely unmuted)

Deadbeef log reports:
PipeWire: Stream error: no node available,

Speaker does work fine however. The problem seems to be in detecting the headphone.

I had the exact same problem recently on a KLV, only it turned out my headphones were plugged in to the microphone jack!

Thanks Geo, but unfortunately, nope, plugged into the right jack -- headphones used daily with Fossapup 64, so hard to make that particular mistake.

Additional info:

I booted up the LiveCD and ran from RAM but same issue remained. I did verify the MD5Sum when I burned the CD with PBurn and the numbers matched.

Further info:

Playing around with things, I found that, though I couldn't get sound out of the headphones using Bookworm default applications, if I executed Mike's Avidemux276-portable64, a video played in Avidemux DID put sound through the headphones.

That audio could not be controlled by the PAV Control's sliders, however, AND that app still showed the headphones as "unplugged"

ALSO

Going to the System> Hardinfo application > Input Devices showed the "HDA Intel PCH Headphone" as connected to ALSA.

@vtpup

As followup to your bug report, I tested headphone audio in the original BW64 10.0.2 (not 10.0.2b)

Test 1:
-ThinkPad X13 laptop with AMD Family 17h/19h HD Audio
-Basic Sony headphones attached to headphone jack
-PavuControl recognizes Headphones (plugged in)
-Deadbeef plays mp3 audio via headphones without difficulty

Test 2:
Acer Aspire 5742Z laptop with basic Intel 3400 Audio (perhaps similar to your Acer Aspire 5349-2635). Again, Deadbeef mp3 audio plays without difficulty via headphones.

At this point, I can't duplicate your reported issue. Maybe others will also reply.

@vtpup :-

I ought to be able to help with this, Steve. But I can't..... :oops:

I haven't used headphones with the traditional 3.5mm 'phono' jack under Puppy for years. When I first used them in Puppy, I quickly discovered what everybody else always said about them.....that setting them up to work correctly was a right PITA. It was, too!

Nah, I switched to using USB headsets at the earliest opportunity. What I liked about these was simplicity; because USB audio devices always seem to have their own audio card built-in to their dongles (connectors), rather than attempting to select a specific function on the main internal card, you just select the entire dedicated card. Bob's yr Uncle; done.

Invariably, they have very simple, basic controls, too; both my USB headsets have the same 2 sliders.....PCM Playback, for the Master volume, and Mic Capture, for adjusting the level of the "boom" microphone. For all I know, they could well be using the same audio chip!

I admit, it's perhaps not an ideal solution for laptop users, 'cos USB ports are always at a premium with the things; despite last year's purchase, the Latitude D630, coming with 4 USB 2.0 ports, I've still had to add a mini-hub (giving me 3 ports from one, so 2 extra.....a total of 6 ports) to have enough for my needs (webcam, mouse & keyboard dongles, a pair of 256 GB USB 3.2 SanDisk 'nano'-sized thumbdrives, giving me a half-terabyte of 'permanent' external storage......and one of the afore-mentioned headsets).

But USB is definitely the way to go for pure simplicity and ease-of-use.....

Mike. ;)

I think the next thing I want to try re. this issue is to get a thumbdrive for the original ISO and make a new frugal installation. I have run out of blank thumb drives (never seem to have enough). I just want to make sure the problem isn't with my CD drive or the physical CD I have.

Are the headphones plugged in when you boot Bookworm Pup64?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Generally, no. But I tried both ways. No change.
