Multimedia on minimal fossapup install

Post by baloss »

Hi 666philb and thanks a lot for another nice pup!
I have a small issue with missing media codecs/libraries on a minimal fossapup usb install (adrv removed). I installed mpv, however PPM downloads a whole bunch of packages, not all of which seems to be required in my opinion (it happened the same with MOC though). Is there a better way to have a functional minimal video player with just the necessary lib/dependencies? Thank you.

hi @baloss ,

welcome to the forum!

the best way to go about keeping the barebones fossapup small would be to compile apps yourself.
if you went that way, i would start with ffmpeg and go from there. ubuntus ffmpeg and dependencies are huge as all config options are enabled and one compiled in puppy with just the wanted options could be 7-8 times smaller.

of if using the PPM consider mplayer rather than mpv as much simpler dependency wise.

@ 666philb
Thanks for the quick answer. Compiling goes well beyond my very limited capabilities :D, but I'll definitively try mplayer. Cheers!
