Can't switch cursor theme [SOLVED]

Post by Subito Piano »

I’ve got a strange snag here….I am looking for a more useful cursor style, as I’m having trouble seeing the “I” cursor in the text fields of a couple applications. (I am looking for a bold, fat “I” cursor!) However, when I go to JWM Desk Manager and select “Mouse Cursor,” I can choose and apply any cursor theme and it doesn’t change. Investigating, I find that the symlink directory /root/.icons/default DOES change to point to the newly-selected cursor theme in usr/share/icons, but the cursor theme itself does not change.

Note that all my cursor themes (there are many right now) are all located in usr/share/icons and all are symlinked to ~/.icons. The original “icons” directory in ~/icons is intact.

As always, thoughts appreciated, you all make for a remarkably helpful forum.

Have you tried restarting the window manager or the X server, after selecting the theme you want?

Oh, certainly.

Also, I compared these directories to those in the virgin adrv_fossapup64_9.5,sfs file, they seem to be the same with same permissions.

Copy the cursor theme you want to ~/.icons and see if that works. (After restarting the X server of course.)

Yeah, I had the theme folders in ~/.icon before, but I tried again anyway, no go. I put themes in /user/share/themes & symlinked to ~/icons (standard procedure), no go, did the opposite, no go.

HOWEVER --

The only thing I could think of trying is dumping all themes but one and seeing what happens, so I moved all but one to a separate location. Still no go. I moved out that theme as well, and when I when I went to change the cursor theme again, a popup informed me I had no themes -- would I like to install a theme pack? I clicked yes, I believe I restarted X, then tried to change the theme -- no go. But after a second restart of X ((??? i think -- sorry, I wasn't taking good mental notes, just trying out various things) -- voila! I had about 2 dozen themes -- and they all work!

So -- thanks for keeping a fire lit under me, Flash. It's been a while since I've seen you post (my lack of activity, not yours!) -- good to see your lemony puppy face again. ;)
