How to update VSCode in fossapup64? (solved)

Post by user1234 »

How to update VSCode in fossapup64? Unlike windows, VSCode doesn't seem to have auto update in linux (I don't remember wether it updated automatically in kubuntu or not). I can install the latest deb and then install it, but I am afraid I might lose my configurations and added extensions. Is that right or will manually installing it cause no problem of losing configurations?

Thanks for any help :) .

Usually with Linux software, a new complete version install over an older version, could brake something, if they are offering update packages.
So, I would try using the update package.

Here is the downloads for the update package.
https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_65

The Linux deb package should work in Fossapup64 9.5
https://update.code.visualstudio.com/1. ... x64/stable
Note:
With Puppy Linux, best to download the deb package.
Left mouse click on it to install.

I looked in their FAQ about updating and it seems the update package will just update the version that is already there.
They say nothing about the update doing anything but update.

Not in Fossapup64 right now, but this may also work.

Could look in the Puppy Package Manager(PPM)
Make sure to first run PPM -> Configure -> data base update
Do a search for visualstudio or vscode.
If it finds anything.
See if it is finding this v1-65 update.
If yes.
PPM should be able to install the update.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

I now remember that VSCode was updated by apt in kubuntu (after installing once with deb). I think it must have added vscode's repository to apt.

I can do that myself  .

Thanks

@user1234,
Go and download VSCode as a .deb file. Then open the download directory with Rox and click on the .deb file. PETGET will install it automatically. This procedure should overwrite the old version with the new one. Then start up VSCode and check the version. The next time VSCode indicates a new version is available you can use this same method to update it again.

Let us know how you make out.

Tried doing that.... ppm gives Error: unable to install.

Edit: My bad. Tried re-downloading the deb and am able to install vscode.
