ndiswrapper / Module not found in /lib/modules/5.4.53

Post by axel »

Hi - have a full install fossapup64 on a 4 GB 64-bit PC and I'm trying to connect a Fritz!WLAN USB dongle to a Fritz!Box 7362 SL.
Network wizard with Ndiswrapper points to a direcotory with file fwlan64.inf and all other files.
Message: fwlan64 driver installed
second msg: loading ndiswrapper failed with the following message:
Module ndiswrapper not found in directory /lib/modules/5.4.53 (have issued modprobe ndiswrapper - got same result)

In a very old notebook (32-bit Gateway Solo 2150 with Puppy 4.3.1) the same Fritz!WLAN USB stick works perfect.
Q: how can I get the correct ndsiwrapper for fossapu64 ?

Ndiswrapper has largely disappeared because it is no longer compatible with modern kernels.

Do you need to use the Fritz dongle to connect to the Fritz box?

You can buy a Linux-compatible n-mode USB adapter for a few dollars.

... no I don't need it necessarily - can life without it. It still works with Win 7.
What is a n-mode USB adapter ? Any brand name ?
I would be ready to use another puppy linux distro instead of fossapup64. It is slow compared to e.g. Slacko5.6

It is slow because you did a full install.
Everything has to be read from drive before it can run.
You should have done a frugal install of Fossapup64.
It loads everything into RAM except what is in the save file/folder.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Looking at this github page it looks like if you take a checkout of master branch it should have support for kernels up to 5.7-rc3
You would have to compile it yourself within Puppy and of course you need kernel_sources loaded as well as the devx.
I seem to recall that last time I did this there was an error issue involving more than 1 instance of a header file with the same name.
I fixed it by searching for these files and deleting a couple of them, leaving only the one which looked right.
It then compiled OK without problems. No guarantees of course.
https://github.com/pgiri/ndiswrapper/commits/master
EDIT:- I compiled the checkout of "master" in FossaPup and it builds quite easily. I only had to delete one "version.h" header file which actually was a symlink.
The .PET is here:-
http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/ndiswrap ... -fossa.pet
but I don't have any hardware (or Windows XP drivers) to test it with.
I fear there is a strong possibility that even though it compiles and the module does load, it may not actually work if you try to use it.
Please report any success or failure.

@OskarTalks - thank you for that pet.
I have downloaded it and installed successfully.
Network Wizard started - used ndiswrapper - got msg fwlan driver installed device (057C:6201) present -
next msg: Module ndiswrapper has loaded successfully ...etc
next msg: The following new module has been loaded: ndiswrapper - no new interfaces were detected .. etc.

@bigpup - ahaaa - that's new for me. I life in Germany and according to Deepl Translater is means sparsam or spaerlich.
So I thought the frugal instaal would have less functinality.
