live usb does not boot (legacy bios/mbr computer

Post by bigpup »

This was a review on Distrowatch, with a 1 ratting.

Latest 9.5 "foss" version live usb does not boot (legacy bios/mbr computer).
Previous version 8.0 bionic live usb stick boots OK.

Not a lot of info in this review.
I guess this computer can boot from USB.

I no longer have a legacy bios computer to check this on.

Could someone, with a legacy bios only computer, check this by trying to boot a Fossapup64 9.5 live install, on a USB drive.

This may be Fossapup64 9.5 just does not support this old a computer.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

I boot xenialpup64, bionicpu64, and fossapup64 from the same old usb flash drive with an old version of syslinux. I still have 4 or 5 or 6 older Pups still installed. e.g. Slacko6.

I installed all of these Pups by copying the vmlinuz, initrd, and sfs files to the usb drive and editing the syslinux.cfg file.

It boots legacy boot, secure boot disabled. i doubt if the old syslinux supports gpt, but it doesn't need to, it just needs to find vmlinuz and initrd.gz on the flash drive.

I don't see any real difference between booting BionicPup64 and Fossapup64.

My machine is not bios only, but legacy mode should work the same as on a bios only machine.

Thanks for your info!

But this needs to be done using the exact boot files that are in the Fossapup64 9.5 ISO.
Making a live install on a USB, using these files only.

@bigpup

How would you like the bootable usb to be created? I have made a number of fossa64 9.5 bootable usb's using the StickPup installer and they boot on legacy mbr computers. Pretty slow on dual core and usb2.

And as usual, you are right about needing more info about the hardware.

I have booted FossaPUP64 from CD + DVD + SG2D via FossaPUP64 ISO file on USB on 3 old desktops and 1 HP touch-screen laptop (circa 2008/9)

@bigpup is correct that without more details, it is a little tough to know the problem that's encountered.

I've been booting Fossapup64 9.5 (frugally installed), from several different flash drives plugged into various computers, including older BIOS, and newer UEFI, computers, with never a problem.

Thanks everyone for your reports about this. :!: :!:

Because of what you all are reporting.
I do not think it is a problem caused by the files in Fossapup64 9.5.
I think it is how the person actually put the files in the iso on the USB drive.

How would you like the bootable usb to be created?

The person reported problems with what they say is a live install to a USB drive.
A basic live install to a USB flash drive:
The drive having one partition, formatted fat32 as it would be when you buy it.
All the files in the Fossapup64-9.5.iso placed on the partition.

But if you use a program designed to do installs of Operating Systems(OS), using the OS iso.
It could do the above basic live install or who knows what else.

I just hate to see bad reviews of Puppy Linux on DistroWatch.com.

The Fossapup64 9.5 ISO has boot loader config files with entries setup for booting from a CD/DVD.

This is a problem on some computers.
I have seen people having problems booting a Live USB.
Going into the boot loader config file and changing the pmedia=cd to pmedia=usbflash.
That fixed finding the Puppy SFS files when booting.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
