More problems noticed in Fossapup64.

Post by April »

I cannot print from epdf.
I get the data/image on screen but when sent to the printer just a blank sheet is ejected.
I sake a screenshot of it and print the screenshot , it works fine
Problem is in epdf.

I download Lastpass extension into Seamonkey and it seems to be there but when I try to set the preferences I get a blank page ?
This is in the URL
moz-extension://0510d4df-d66d-40c5-b4cc-050b540391ec/tabDialog.html?dialog=preferences&cmd=open

When you put your own background picture in JWM it looses it on the next boot?

guvcview runs OK but when you go to record a video or photo it crashes

Abiword crashes when you try to add a file or a picture.

Is anyone doing anything about these faults?

The Australian State Governments have all enacted laws to steal your assets on your death. All legal paperwork is binned and all assets seized on one disgruntled child's complaint.Move them well before you die or go into a home.

Abiword is almost the first program to be removed in my Puppies.
I just don't know why it is still present in Puppy.

I stumbled in this too but I solved it by ticking "fit".

It seems Abiword is present in Puppy because it's lightweight. Don't know if there would be a better similar alternative.
I use Abiword mostly for quick viewing of documents (I recently converted some file into .pdf without problem).
But for real office tasks, I rather launch Libreoffice appimage which is provided in my native language.

@April , it sounds to me like a dodgy download.

I've run Fossapup since autumn last year, and I haven't noticed any of these issues.

Epdfview - sounds more like a printer issue. It prints for me; so too do Qpdfview, the Java-based JPDFViewer, Adobe's last 'Reader' for Linux (v9.5.5, from around 2012!), and even Foxit Reader running under WINE.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Last Pass - it doesn't actually run under SeaMonkey. (Never HAS, to the best of my knowledge).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Background images - two ways you can do this. 'Orthodox' way is to put your image in/usr/share/backgrounds, then it'll always show when you run the background chooser. 'Unorthodox'; stick it in /mnt/home. Leave this ROX window open. Right-click any desktop icon->Backdrop. A wee window appears. Drag your background image and drop it in the box. Sorted.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

GuvcView - never had this happen to me. Guvcview is always pretty stable, if it's been installed properly.....and assuming your webcam's supported & configured correctly. I always research new hardware thoroughly since I've been on Linux; I don't just grab the first bright, shiny thing that catches my eye any longer. As it happened, the very cam I'd been looking to get for years turned out be literally plug'n'play.....because of the UVC kernel module. (And that's been in the kernel for a long time, so it seems.)

The top-end Logitech cams - mine's a c920 HD 'Pro' - were among the first to gain full support, primarily due to their popularity. That, and superb picture quality....

----------------------------------------------------------------------

AbiWord - uuuuuh.....long-standing issue, this one. I use either LibreOffice or SoftMaker's FreeOffice. I even turned the FreeOffice word-processor component into a 'standalone' item.....which works well with most Puppies. But, er, 32GB of RAM does kinda mean I never need to worry about how much space something will take up..!!

As stated above, much of this points a bad download of the ISO.

Fossapup is installed how, on what device, what format, would be useful info.

I too would suggest you do a fresh new download of the Fossapup64 9.5 iso
A fresh new clean install.

One possible issue with the iso.
If you download it to a location that is used by Windows. That location can be fragmented.
The iso will also be fragmented.
This can cause install issues.

Do you understand fragmentation of a drive partition and how to fix it?

Also, Fossapup64 9.5 has an update feature.
Quickpet->Info->Fossapup updates
Run this to make sure you have all the latest bug fixes and updates.
Save and reboot, so you are now using them.

Abiword is just full of problems and it seems to stay that way, even with newer versions.
If there was something as small and better, it would get replaced in Puppy.
Maybe an update will come along and really fix it.

But I am not having the issues you report, using the Abiword in Fossapup64 9.5
Maybe an example of the image or file you are trying to insert?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Ok @mikewalsh that s not all correct .

Firstly I have always run Lastpass in seamonkey the trick now (last couple of years) is to get the legacy version of the extension.
Epdfview is not a printer issue .The printer runs fine and I use it a lot in Fossa
Background view is put in with JWM deskmanager and has always worked elsewhere.
GUCview also is missing something it needs for sure.
Abiword loses the lot if you try a "save as" so I brought down LibreOffice and tried to work with text and images there and it crashed too when I went to save it and all was lost.

So I value your opinion greatly Mike but here it just aint working right .
Some basic program is missing I think and its affecting many programs .

@joet12345 Ill try that.. I did so we'll see when I boot fossa again.

@bigpup I did a md5sum on the iso when I got it and I cut a live CD from which I boot ,so Ill try a fresh live CD. Its just such a pain to have to set it all up again .Thanks.

With CD burning an iso image.
Burn at a low speed.
No higher than 8.

It really is affected by the quality of the CD drive.
How clean it is inside.
How well it is working.

Well, the quality of the CD disk can also be a factor.

Also the save you make to use with the booted CD.
I assume you are storing the fossapupsave on the computers internal hard drive.
If it is stored on a partition that Windows uses.
There is a chance the partition is fragmented.
Thus the save will be fragmented.
This can cause problems reading correctly the save.
Using Windows defrag program, to defrag the partition, can help.

Just some ideas to consider.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

@April :-

Until recently, I would have agreed with you. But with the current release, the SeaMonkey team seem to have made some critical changes that have completely broken compatibility with most of the contents of the 'legacy archive'.

Don't ask me what they've done. They're not making the move to current FF's WebAPI stuff, yet at the same time they're no longer letting you use the 'legacy' stuff, either. I don't quite know what their endgame is here.....

April, as I run more than one Puppy, I use Puppus Dogfellow's SFS builds of LibreOffice from here, viewtopic.php?f=96&t=404. Never had a problem with them other than having to change some settings:
Tools>options>Online Update reset to never.
Tools>AutoCorrect>AutoCorrect Options: Uncheck Automatic *bold* and especially /italic/ etc.; and such others as are counter to my needs.
Although LibreOffice takes up a good bit of storage space, put in use it actually isn't all that much of a RAM-Hog. The discrepancy results from the Office Suite having been constructed with a unified framework of which its components, such as Writer, only make use of some parts. So it really doesn't pay to create a 'light-version' by removing modules you don't need. The same is true of ApacheOpenOffice. The main difference between them is that Puppus Dogfellow has graciously saved us the trouble of having to assemble the applications from a downloaded publisher's package.
I've unsuccessfully searched for 'just a 64-bit' word-processor. Mike Walsh's Stand-alone FreeOffice Textwriter was good. But I've recently received notice that as of today I have to register if I want to keep it. Softmaker Office, and its free version, FreeOffice are good products, reputed to be more compatible with microsoft-office. But my limited testing suggests that Textmaker uses more RAM than LibreOffice Writer. Having fired Textmaker up recently, I received a notice that if I wanted to use it after today I'd have to register. In the past I've registered and used the full product. It's publisher doesn't abuse having your email address. Occasionally it will offer free fonts; once and awhile suggest you purchase the full product. But I don't see an advantage for me to switch from the free LibreOffice writer.
I've looked for an alternative. Haven't found one: Focus-writer hogs the screen; Ted, limited and archaic. Lovely programs under Wine; well, wine. No need to repeat what's been said about Abiword.
