Online Banking (Palemoon not a valid browser)?

Post by peppyy »

I don't even remember when I switched to Puppy, Yes it was that long ago and I am "older" now. Never had a problem accessing my personal sites like personal webpage, banking, ebay etc. until today. Have used Palemoon for most of those years and haven't had a major problem until today when my bank said that there was no upgrade available for my browser.

I can no longer access my account at my bank without switching to another browser, Checked the Palemoon sight and can't find anything about the issue, only suggestions for info hungry browsers with little or no control over your personal info.

I know my bank has been bought many times over the years, (still have the checks to prove it), however they are still a small bank. I know it is all about tracking and selling information and although I have already added all the things I needed to continue using my online banking, like cookie monster and a couple other add-ons. Now I can't even login to contact them.

Sorry for the rant. and I know this isn't the right place for it. Just wanted to get it out and hopefully find a solution.

Puppy Linux. It just works!

Its a fact of computer life ,they keep updating , but in doing so when they can they alter the things you can and can't do . Tightening it to suit themselves . By not continuing to support old versions of programs ,they don't have the cost and they force you to accept their control.
A double pleasure for them!

All you can do is experiment with other browsers coming online that treat you better ...for a while.

The Australian State Governments have all enacted laws to steal your assets on your death. All legal paperwork is binned and all assets seized on one disgruntled child's complaint.Move them well before you die or go into a home.

I have to use Firefox to pay my credit card. One Puppy I tried, I don't remember which one, came with a browser that had a user agent switch that would spoof any of a number of different browsers. I set it to say I was using Firefox and it worked.

You might just need to set a useragent override for that particular site so that the site thinks you're using Firefox instead of Pale Moon. It's possible, if you have an up-to-date UserAgent string for Firefox, to manually add an override in Pale Moon's config. For example: How to create a new useragent override string in Pale Moon - Pale Moon forum

Supposedly, there's now an extension that will automate some of the process for you, so you don't have to mess with about:config. I haven't tried it, though.

You need to call, on the phone, the bank, and ask them what they require you to use.

If they want you to use online banking, they will tell you exactly what you need.

This should be easy information to get from them!

If not.
Find a better bank to deal with :thumbup2:

I am going to guess, they only want you using specific browsers.
Example:
My bank wants you to use one of these browsers and must be set, using this security setting.

Note:
That method for Firefox works for PaleMoon.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

It used to be everything required IE, then people got to spoofing browser id and the control freak folks started digging deeper even determining operating system. I remember one site that required WINDOWS!!!!

Luckily anymore rare to see requirement for iE. But they do seem to want the latest version Firefox or Chrome. I suggest you use portable version of one of those. I recently was experimenting and found you can use windows Chromium (didnt try actual Chrome with its goo-goo googly spyware baked in since there isnt a 32bit version) and the portable version of windows Firefox in WINE. They identify as running in windows. Chromium will occasionally freeze (think it maxes out RAM) but otherwise works ok. Portable windows Firefox is fine and frankly couldnt tell difference from the linux Firefox. Supposedly WINE has problem with the installer on regular windows Firefox, but none I saw with the portable. These are latest versions. And can use all the add-ons. For what its worth the latest windows Pale Moon also works fine in wine as does Kmeleon. For chromium and firefox personally I run Ghostery addon with custom setup (default options maybe not what you want) and Cookie autodelete that unless site is white listed will nuke any cookies once you leave a website. Surfing with cookies turned off is pretty much impossible. But accepting then deleting cookes seems next best thing. If you want to go for more control, NO-SCRIPT for Firefox will let you pick and choose exactly which scripts you want to allow to run. Get the version where every script is denied by default and you allow ones you want to allow, there is another version where everything is allowed by default and you have to then deny whichever ones you want to deny. Easier to only allow ones you want.
