retrovol is a volume setting program only. Primarily for alsa. It may be necessary to configure alsa. What speakers do you have? And the sound card?
Different devices. Different approach.

First, you need to run the alsamixer command in terminal and see what is happening there. It sometimes happens that the slider only affects one channel of sound if you use the cursor keys. Try moving the slider using the Page Up and Page Down keys.

@rburkartjo :-
Coupla questions, if I may?
I see these things connect via a standard 3.5mm headphone jack:-

I assume this is what you have it plugged into on your 'puter..? Not by any chance a mono input, is it? I've come across setups like this before...
--------------------------
Normally, when you have speakers plugged into a headphone socket, you control them through Retrovol in exactly the same way as you would a headphone.
Menu->Setup->ALSA sound wizard. Click on the button for Multiple Sound Cards. It's just possible these may appear as a separate item, though I rather doubt it.....

@rburkartjo :-
I can top that, easily. I'm using a Goodman's powered speaker system - complete with "satellites" AND a sub-woofer (and around 50W RMS output, so not too shabby!) - that was originally intended for connecting to any MP3 player via its headphone socket. Gives you some idea of how old these are; I bought them just a shade under 20 years ago, actually for use with a portable CD player. Still work fantastically well, giving clear, crisp treble & deep, punchy bass from the sub.
The sole input is a 1.5 metre lead with a 3.5 mm jack plug on the end..! Perfect for an MP3 player.....and ideal for connecting to the headphone socket of a computer (in my case, via an audio extension lead, actually, 'cos the amp/sub unit sits under my bed, "firing" back at the wall. Seems sub-woofers work best like this, apparently. Works for me, anyroad.)
