How to make bootable flash of OTHER OS using Fossapup?

Post by Phillip »

I've seen several posts regarding making a Fossapup usb flash and only now can I do that successfully. However, I am unable, as yet, to reliably flash other OS ISOs and IMGs using Puppy9.5 without jumping through a lot of hoops using third party flash utilities and scripts. Coming from Mint, where I have little trouble, I'm wondering what is missing from Fossapup that prevents creating bootable USB flash drives reliably. Most of the solutions found here have addressed making Puppy drives, but I'm wanting to use Fossapup as my daily desktop without giving up on exploring other OSs.

The installers in Puppy are for installing Puppy only.
Why?
Because Puppy has some things that are the Puppy way and does not follow the mainline Linux OS way of doing things.
Puppy has several ways it can be installed, but only by using installers in Puppy.
These installers are not coded for or care about how to install other Linux OS's.

You do need to use 3rd party installers to install Non-Puppy OS's.

For USB installs.
The Linux version of these should work in Puppy to make installs of other Linux OS.
viewtopic.php?f=85&t=157

All Linux OS have their own installers to specifically install them and they do not install the same way Puppy does.
Even a Puppy full install, is not exactly the same, as a normal install of another Linux OS.

We are Puppy!
Resistance is futile!

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Fossapup, you can check out anytime you like but, you can never leave? Thank you for the reference link, I read it prior to posting, nice article, just didn't find my answer there. I've been enjoying using puppies too long to complain about something small like the inability to make a flash drive of some other OS. I don't remember having the problem with Slacko64-3.0 but then, I didn't use it as my daily desktop. It does surprise me, a little, that the best puppy for me, to date, is based on Ubuntu. Though not bad, it is a distribution I have been avoiding for years. Long live Puppy9.5.

Understand that in no way is this Puppy a version of Ubuntu.
Only thing in common is this Puppy was built using core Linux files and programs from the Ubuntu repository.
These are the same files and programs needed to make any version of a Linux OS.
All Linux OS use them.

The only thing that may be possible is programs compiled and packaged for the Ubuntu Fossa OS and stored on the Ubuntu Fossa repository.
May also work in Fossapup64 9.5
Why?
Because both Ubuntu Fossa and Fossapup have the same versions of the core Linux programs and files.
Puppy usually never has all the other needed dependency files and programs Ubuntu has.
They have to be found and added, but even then, Puppy is still very different from Ubuntu.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

I can't say that I fully understand everything that WOOF is doing.
I've used it to compile several puppies using various distros without notable success of creating a better linux.
I found linux back in 1995 and became proficient with Slackware, enjoyed building everything from scratch so, I'm comfortable with learning what is needed to make a puppy be all it can be. Just need time and resources.
Digging into the engineering without a manual or schematics is what has has kept me from progressing in developing my perfect puppy. It's been quite awhile since I've taken a serious look at puppies so, just maybe there is more documentation and instruction out there to help put success within my grasp.
EasyOS from Barry has a great many shortcomings in its present state but, it shows great promise and I really like it. I would like to have the time to study it in more depth.

If by "OTHER OS" you mean other "Linux" versions, the answer is no. If you mean other "Puppy" versions, it is ridiculously easy. Here's how (from scratch):
1) Format a thumbdrive with ext3 and set the boot flag, using GParted.
2) For each puppy version you wish to install, make a separate directory on the USB flash thumbdrive
3) For each puppy version, open it's ISO file and copy all ".sfs" files plus the initrd & vmlinuz files into it's new directory on the thumbdrive.
4) Run Grub4Dos bootloader config (Menu->Setup) selecting the USB thumbdrive (specify "Only on this drive")

That's it! You should have a bootable USB flash thumbdrive with however many Puppies you copied to it. It should display a list of puppies to boot when you use the thumbdrive.

If you add more puppies later, don't run Grub4Dos again. Just open the menu.list file in '/' on the thumbdrive and copy+paste then edit an existing entry, changing the title and paths as needed.

For BIOS systems, there is still ISObooter.

True, but I was trying to avoid the "TMI" type of reply that often happens. So I didn't mention booting ISO's. I didn't mention UEFI. I didn't mention booting to multiple disks. I didn't mention GPT.

BTW, If by the odd chance one wants to make a bootable windows ISO, woeusb is a good tool (although I think it can also be done with Rufus.

Install:

Code: Select all

curl \
    --location \
    --remote-name \

--remote-header-name \
https://github.com/WoeUSB/WoeUSB/raw/master/sbin/woeusb
chmod +x woeusb

https://github.com/WoeUSB/WoeUSB#run-from-source

https://www.pearltrees.com/s243a/using- ... m328917414

run

Code: Select all

woeusb -v --device /path/to/windows.iso /dev/sdc

https://superuser.com/questions/1527197/debian-creating-windows-10-bootable-install-usb-drive-using-terminal-dd

You can download ISOs from Microsofts website,

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/softwar ... indows8ISO
https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/softwar ... ndows10ISO

and it is possible to recover the product key from your computer

if say you want to move windows to virtualbox.

I've always maintained that with Puppy being considered as "odd" as it is by the wider Linux community, Linux veterans probably have MORE 'issues' switching to Puppy than Windows refugees. They have to un-learn a lot of what they already know, and re-learn it again from the ground up, the Puppy way.....and they're probably the most vociferous complainers in this regard..!

Mike. ;)
