How to frugal install without losing my pupsave? (ThinkPad X140e) (Solved)

Post by r96chase »

This is so embarrassing but...how do I make sure that I don't lose my current pupsave after frugal installation?

Sincerely,

Chase

A pupsave is only good on the exact Puppy version it was made for.
Pupsaves are not universal and usable on any Puppy version.
A pupsave made on Tahrpup 7.5 will not work on Bionicpup32 8.0.

Make a copy of the pupsave to a location that is safe.
A location that is outside of the frugal install.
Another partition or another drive.
That is always a good idea anyway.
Always have a saved copy of the good working pupsave.

If you do a fresh frugal install of a specific Puppy version (on a different drive or partition) and you have a old pupsave for that specific Puppy version.
The old pupsave can be copied to the fresh frugal install. Reboot and it is using everything in the old pupsave.

If you do a new frugal install of a different Puppy version.
You will have to start fresh configuring, settings, adding software, etc.... and make a new pupsave specifically for it.

@bigpup I am on BionicPup64 though. I'm running it live and I'm thinking of frugally installing it to my hard drive so I don't have to bottleneck my USB drive all the time.

Forgive me for not clarifying. I'm kinda new to this. Sorry.

@ bigpup

coming from another thread, I think what chase is trying to do is dual boot a puppy, (bionic64?) with an existing kubuntu install on the HDD.

The easiest way might be to have bionic64 on a dedicated usb and use the lenovo disc selector to choose the drive at boot time.

the next easiest might be to either

1. set some parameters in the kubuntu boot loader to choose the bionic frugal at will
or
2. install bionic as a frugal, and reinstall a bootloader that will handle both.

Perhaps Chase can confirm some specs by opening /boot in a filemanager and taking a screen shot, should option 1 or 2 be the way he wants to proceed

@williwaw Okay I'm thinking of doing the bootable USB route, how do I do that?

You have bionic on a usb at present? we need to know how you installed it on the usb. "Live" has a couple of different meanings. Can you save your changes in bionic? do you have a save file/ folder on the usb? can you take a screenshot of the top level contents of the usb shown in a file browser? or list the contents?

@williwaw I mean...I have it live on my 32GB green usb drive, but it's a bit bulky. I also put the current pupsave into the hard drive. Uh...yeah, I'm a complete noob.

Here is my current "boot" usb itself.

I want to change to a Sandisk ultrafit you mentioned earlier.

please describe the menu you are using to choose your USB at boot time. bios? kubuntu? bionic?
if you reinstall bionic on to an ultrafit and just leave the ultrafit always plugged in, there is a boot device menu that you can make come up in the bios by pressing a key at powerup, (should you want to boot to the device that is second down in the boot order)

Okay, if somebody else sees this, I want to know how bootflash works.

I'm thinking of copying the iso or something to another USB drive. Do I select "iso" or "this"? I think "this" refers to the pupsave or something, but I'm not sure.

Apologies for the spam by the way, but like what my signature has said, I'm pretty much that.

One last post before I consider this solved:

Long story short, I figured out how pupsaves work...by copying the BionicPup64 iso onto this fit USB drive. Yeah.
Don't ask how I did it. But I did it. I'm a genius. A newbie genius, but a genius.

Thanks for trying to help and sorry for beating around the bush again and again.

You may now continue with your day/have a great night.

With love,
Chase E.
