Re: Winmodem or hardware modem for Linux?

I apologize. I was very confused.

I was under the mistaken impression that using a hardware based modem gives you some sort of rare special capability in Linux.

It sounds completely stupid I know.

I’m building a computer here. I’m deciding what the final components on it will be.

Winmodem or hardware modem for Linux?

Dumb question but what advantages would I have if I use a hardware based modem instead of a winmodem? If I have to use my last ISA slot and use a PCI slot, what would I be missing? My PCI winmodem is completely compatible with Symantec Talkworks Pro 3.0. What do you do with a hardware based modem in ...

Re: Trying to boot MS-DOS

It does not boot Puppy Linux Wow I never experienced that before. All of the Puppy Linux's I needed PLOP for booted. I had 2 machines that were old enough that they couldn't boot from USB via the BIOS. They needed PLOP to in effect be the boot loader to be able to boot Puppy's from a USB stick. But ...

Re: Trying to boot MS-DOS

Hi @Insanitor I offer a solution: SuperGrub2 Disk (SG2D). It will find your installed OSes and boot them. I tried it. It didn’t. MS-DOS boots but nothing else. It says it cannot detect any lst or cfg files in any partition. This means that it doesn’t boot Puppy Linux. @Insanitor Have you looked at P ...

Are you sure this doesn’t mess with A20? Just asking. Don't think so. Should be able to select the primary and secondary HDD order in the BIOS pretty safely. Grub4dos appears to be a very complex program. I’ll try Null_ID’s tutorial. I have copied it. Bigpup said this in another post: “When you are ...

Re: UEFI BIOS SETTINGS for Puppy Linux

Here is my wildest guess: That’s from another source of course. It’s not like I know anything about Linux! “For booting Linux on a UEFI computer, you typically need to set the "esp" (EFI System Partition) flag on the partition where the EFI system files are located. Additionally, you might need to en ...

Re: Installed Seamonkey on new remaster, all HTTPS connections broken now.

If you decide to reinstall Seamonkey, I can tell you that I’ve never seen it in any format other than srs. So you unpack it to the directory of your choice unless Seamonkey comes with a .desktop file. Then I would suggest you unpack it according to how that file is set up. I’m sorry I can’t give a de ...

Re: Trying to boot MS-DOS

Dual hard drive setup. MS-DOS gets a dedicated hard drive, and you install it there, where it can have its own boot loader and sector and file system, guaranteed to work. This becomes the master drive that boots 1st. Then you download Grub4Dos from where ever. Under pure, real mode DOS, while you ...

Found the answer:

The installation procedure to avoid this is to do like a manual install. Anything automatic will get you.

Menu>setup>puppy installer>frugalpup>puppy>this puppy>and so on.

Then install grub for booting.

Re: Looking to install Puppy Linux 32bit on an old computer

The decision on which to install depends on which socket your motherboard has. If it’s socket 478 then you do not have a 64 bit pc. If it’s socket 775 then you can get or already have a 64 bit pc. Generally true.....but not totally 100% correct. It's a little-known fact that Intel manufactured a few ...
