From my discussions with @jamesbond the problem lies from and issue with EXT4 partitions and grub4dos bootloader. For a normal initrd grub4dos works fine, but Fatdog uses a humongous initrd, which causes issues with slow boot.

I have 4GB of RAM and also 4GB of Swap partition.

As soon as the swap partition starts to be used, the computer slows down.
The more the swap is in use, the more the computer is getting slower.

What am I doing wrong?
Should I deactivate the Swap partition?

This is the error you get if you modify lower layers despite what the warning in overlay documentation says. aufs allows this, overlay doesn't.

Overlay won't add and remove layers after boot like aufs will, so you wouldn't be able to load and unload sfs files on the fly.
If/when the likes of brtfs (that uses copy on write, snapshots, compression etc) commonly supersedes ext then a btrfs device mounted with compression and populated ...

@fatdoguser Thank you. This will be fixed. In the meantime, everyone concerned can chmod 600 /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf after adding or removing wifi networks via the systray network icon (Network Tool) and the wpa_cli command.

4GB ram laptop, 600K of which is grabbed by Radeon video ram, with the standard FD64.sfs, devx sfs and a additional chrome sfs all copied to ram ... and is working well.

fd64.sfs extracted out of initrd i.e. is loaded with basesfs= kernel boot parameter

I don't use the regular fatdog chrome ...

/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf starts off with just root having read access, but after using the systray network icon to open, scan and connect to a ssid the permissions change to readable by all (whilst including all ssid and passwords in clear text).
