Re: Linux and especially OS running as root are malware?

As above, Puppy linux user group is working fine, but, I tried posting a link to distrowatch, and an immediate rejection for "going against our community standards".

I put in a claim to say that's not right, which probably won't go anywhere. I would love to know what's the cause of this flagging ...

Re: Linux and especially OS running as root are malware?

Strange to see that report. The Puppy Linux Users Group on Facebook is working fine:

https://facebook.com/groups/105376249522117

Maybe it's just the other linuxes that aren't as good as Puppy....? :)

Re: SSD Drive Disappeared

BUGGER

Do you have spare drives to copy data to?

A few suggestions....

Run testdisk to copy files - it's good, but gives jibberish file names
I think photorec is better for recovering the files themselves

Perhaps you can use dd to create an image of the drive, and then try to recover the image ...

Infra Red Dongle Software

I have recently purchased a cheap USB-C dongle that I can control TVs and Air Cons and whatever via an app on my android phone.

Having it hanging out of the phone is clumsy and awkward, but otherwise works surprisingly well. I wonder if there's an app / program that can command the usb dongle in ...

Re: What is USB-C good for?

I recently purchased a new PC with two real USB ports and a bunch of USB-C ports. So I purchased a couple of USB-C to USB hubs. They work great. The USB-C bandwidth makes the hubs work a full speed, and I have a whole bunch of USB ports now.

F-Droid is an alternate app store, having mostly open source stuff on it.

It's amazing the speed difference in apps from F-Droid versus the official google Play Store.

I recently had to get a new phone, the old phone's battery was dying. Android does a great job of copying old phone data to the ...

Re: ☢️Google will be tracking everything starting 8-weeks from now

This question probably needs a new topic, but in relation to google's tracking and moreso the abundance of ads we're getting, is there a good list for ad prevention via using the hosts file?

I used to use it years ago, but have been using Ublock or AdBlock, and haven't utilised the hosts file for a ...

No Desktop after Power Failure

I got home today to find my PC turned off. I assume there was a power failure. After turning it back on, it ran through the auchk on the savefile, but I cannot get a desktop. Instead it only gets to a prompt.

The image attached is what I get to. If I press enter it gets me a prompt. If I run ...

Re: Seven minutes to boot from ext4 with no safefile or savedir

From my discussions with jamesbond the problem lies from and issue with EXT4 partitions and grub4dos bootloader. For a normal initrd grub4dos works fine, but Fatdog uses a humongous initrd, which causes issues with slow boot.
Switching to the initrd-nano solves the problem. My PC boots in about ten ...

Re: 10 minue boot time? Frugal 96 CE SSD Laptop?

That looks very reminiscent of an issue with Fatdog doing the same thing.
grub4dos on an EXT4 partition with a big initrd has a super long boot time. It is sorted by using the initrd-nano in Fatdog. Not sure about Fossa 96 and a solution.

Re: NVIDIA Install Question

I suspect I know why

Following Clarity 's tip to follow don570 's instructions, I selected the Nvidia driver SFS for my machine. It doesn't work. I suspect it's because the driver in the SFS manager is for Kernel 6.1.46 and FD903 runs Kernel 6.10.2

Booting with the SFS loaded ...

I had a similar problem with an old eeePC. It wasn't always noticeable, but the colours were slightly off. My problem started on a flight overseas. The laptop got jolted around in my bag. A good hit on one side of it and everything came good. Loose connection somewhere.
