Re: Swap file causing very slow performance?

Update: I downloaded Vivaldi from mikewalsh 's thread (https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?p=3491#p3491) and have been using it for normal work for a couple days. It seems to be behaving better and not gobbling up all the memory I have. This may be the ultimate solution to my problem, and ...

Re: Swap file causing very slow performance?

Wiz57 No, I installed friendly-fossa64-rc3 as the only OS in a frugal install on the internal hard drive, which I completely wiped and repartitioned, removing Windows 10, which was running out of space on the 60 GB drive. I now have sda1, which is 100 MB VFAT EFI, and sda2, which is 59.5 GB, ext3 ...

Re: Swap file causing very slow performance?

You have friendly-fossa64-rc3 installed on the internal drive? If yes. Is it the only OS installed? What format did you make the partition? Was the install done to a freshly setup drive, new partitions, formatting? Thanks bigpup . Yes, I installed friendly-fossa64-rc3 as the only OS in a frugal ...

Re: Swap file causing very slow performance?

Thanks davids45 and geo_c . I'm learning to watch conky and gatotray carefully. I seem to be OK with half a dozen Firefox tabs open, but if I open many more, memory starts getting really low, and the CPU goes to 100% and everything hangs. Then I may be able to kill Firefox and recover, but if I do ...

Swap file causing very slow performance?

Hi everyone, I've been using "Friendly FossaPup64" on a system for a couple months. I thought I had it in pretty reasonable working shape when I gave it to my wife to use as a replacement for a very old desktop that is now struggling to run Windows 10. Shortly before turning it over to her, I did a ...

Re: Trouble installing friendly-fossa64-rc3 (solved)

I forgot to include the list of modules in fossapup64initmodules.txt, which again was the same list for either the full fossapup64 9.5 or friendly fossa rc3. That list is:

Code: Select all

hid_sensor_custom,hid_sensor_hub,intel_ishtp_hid,hid_multitouch,intel_ish_ipc,intel_ishtp,i2c_hid

Re: Trouble installing friendly-fossa64-rc3 (solved)

Hi Everyone, Thought I'd provide an update to this issue. I've been trying FossaPup on a different computer, and I think the behavior regarding this issue might help someone diagnose what's going on. The new system is an Asus Zenbook UX360C Notebook, with 4 GB RAM, and an internal SSD. I used Lick ...

Re: How to use Brother wireless laser printer in FriendlyFossa/FossaPup 9.5?

Somehow when I last posted that I was giving up on getting this printer installed, I missed a few other posts, including dogcat 's pointer to ETP 's information on the brprinter driver available through PPM. Sorry, everyone! It was my first experience with PPM (yes, I'm that new), but it went ...

Re: Wireless mouse recommendations?

Quick update: BestBuy had a sale on the Logitech M220 yesterday for $12.99. I picked one up, plugged it in, and it works great. Looks like the simpler, more generic (and cheaper) the better. :thumbup2:

Thanks again @garnet and @mikewalsh for your suggestions. They were right on target.

Re: Printer installation, FriendlyFossa/FossaPup 9.5

It looks like you might have drivers now. If it were me, I'd test it in steps: 1. connect using USB cable, if that works I tried that, and it did indeed have the driver. However, when printing the test page, the printer began spewing blank sheets of paper as fast as it could, until I turned it off ...

Re: Printer installation, FriendlyFossa/FossaPup 9.5

Thanks wizard and mikewalsh ! I hate those trackpads! I always brush it with my hand while typing, and it moves my cursor and makes a mess of what I'm typing. I plan to turn it off once I get a good wireless mouse set up. (But then I'll live in fear that someday the mouse will die and then how will ...

Re: Printer installation, FriendlyFossa/FossaPup 9.5

Thanks wizard ! That certainly seems promising. I followed the directions that came up after downloading, here: https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadhowto.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcl2700dw_us_eu_as&os=128&dlid=dlf006893_000&flang=4&type3=625 It went well, until the last step, running the ...

How to use Brother wireless laser printer in FriendlyFossa/FossaPup 9.5?

Hi again. Sorry to have to ask for so much help, but I think I’m getting close to being functional with FriendlyFossa/FossaPup64 9.5. Now my issue is with setting up my printer. My printer is a wireless network printer, a Brother MFC-L2700DW B&W laser printer/scanner/fax. I don't use the fax c ...

Solved: Wireless mouse recommendations?

Thanks garnet and mikewalsh ! I remembered I have an old Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard with a clunky big dongle on an old desktop (which I'll consider converting to Puppy one of these days). I tried that, and it works great with FossaPup. So I'm going to go ahead and order a regular Logitech ...

Wireless mouse recommendations?

Hi again, I’m enjoying Friendly Fossa 9.5, and it’s mostly meeting my needs, but I’d like to install a wireless mouse. I have a very nice (and expensive) Logitech M720 bluetooth mouse that worked fine on this computer under Windows 10, but I’ve uninstalled Windows in favor of FriendlyFossa. I’ve trie ...

Another good rule for testing/reviewing your work: Find someone who knows next to nothing about the thing they're reviewing. (That's me.) They'll tell you about things that more experienced users breeze through without even noticing.

Re: Trouble installing friendly-fossa64-rc3

Hi again @wizard, Guess what? I was reading more of the Friendly Fossa thread on the forum, and saw that @TerryH on Dec 10, 2021 had also encountered the same error, which he described as “an error regarding adding hid_sensors to probe.” He found a work-around by renaming the fossapup64initmodules.tx ...

Re: Trouble installing friendly-fossa64-rc3

Hi @wizard My bios menu doesn’t have the Legacy Support option. I tried your suggestion, though, and installed fossapup64 9.5, using your UEFI instructions. I had tried it before, and couldn’t get it to work, but this time with your instructions, it seems to have worked! I’ve booted and rebooted seve ...

Re: Trouble installing friendly-fossa64-rc3

Thanks so much @bigpup and @wizard for your help. I have not been able to find how to disable UEFI in the BIOS. The only options I could find were to turn off Secure Boot, (which I had to do to boot from the live USB stick originally,) and to “Clear All Secure Boot Keys”, which also disables Secure B ...

Trouble installing friendly-fossa64-rc3 (solved)

I’m installing friendly-fossa64-rc3 posted by @wizard Puppy (see https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=4681 ) on a HP Pavilion X2 laptop/tablet convertible system. (I’m only using it as a laptop. The screen is cracked, so I don’t use it as a tablet.) I love the “friendliness” of this Puppy! I ...
