Re: auchk taking too long
Do you use savefile/dir in RAM mode (savefile=ram:...)? If so, did you also disable periodic saves (RAM save interval = 0 in Fatdog64 Event Manager)? That would make the /etc/booted file not being deleted from the savefile/dir at shutdown. Yes and yes. If that's the case, I'd suggest using a really ...

Re: auchk taking too long
As far as I know, the ssd is good. It is a good brand (Crucial) and hasn't had a lot of use. It's not doing anything screwy that I can see, but I have a backup. I think if /etc/booted exists at boot, it means that there has been a shutdown that hasn't gone through rc.shutdown, where the file is ...

Re: auchk taking too long
pc310don, thanks for asking! For some reason, /etc/booted is not getting removed. While I figure it out, I've remarked out auchk from rc.sysinit. I still wonder why auchk is taking so long.

auchk taking too long
On booting Fatdog 813, auchk appears to be taking longer with each boot; it's now up to almost 2 minutes. Since my storage is SSD, my first guess was that maybe it needed to be trimmed. I did mount -o remount, discard /dev/mapper/dmcrypt0 /dev/sda2 ; fstrim -a but this did not help. (For future ...

Re: Linux kernel updates
if your system works well and reliably, then there is really no reason to upgrade the kernel continuously. That's what I wanted to hear! bigpup, new hardware is not a problem here! I'm using an old computer that won't even boot with series 5 or 6 kernels (new feature: it won't boot with your ...

Linux kernel updates
In the month since jamesbond posted instructions for compiling 4.19.319 linux kernel for Fatdog, the version number at kernel.org has jumped to 4.19.322. How would I know if these are minor tweaks or significant security fixes? The changelog is incomprehensible to me. In a security kernel upgrades ...

Re: How to boot 902 in Lenovo S-12 netbook? (solved)
I'm using Fatdog with the 4.19.320 kernel (thanks to jamesbond's instructions in the previous post) on my 2009 S12 netbook. I used localmodconfig https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/quickly-build-trimmed-linux.html because otherwise the compilation takes 10 hours. I read somewhere that the ...

Re: How to package a kernel for Fatdog after a successful compilation
dr_Dan: The devs provide many kernels and make it easy to swap them, so it is not surprising that this is not a faq. My system works well with series 4 kernels, but fails with series 5 and 6. I assume there will be some small security benefit to using the latest v. 4 kernel if I can pull it off, but ...

Re: How to boot 902 in Lenovo S-12 netbook? (solved)
The lenovo S12 ideapad is working very well with fatdog 813, syslinux boot, 4.19.92 kernel, mini-initrd, encrypted save partition, on a 16GB flash drive. AntiX's live flash drive setup is great, but I like this one more. jamesbond, regarding the kernel build, thanks for the offer of help, and thanks ...

Re: How to boot 902 in Lenovo S-12 netbook? (solved)
Hello jamesbond, Thank you for making the openchrome driver. I have 902 running with 4.19.92 kernel. It boots to 1280x768 resolution. The menu bar is offscreen, but I can scroll to it. I installed the openchrome package, ran xorgwizard, typed custom resolution 1280x800. But now xinit reports ...

Re: How to boot 902 in Lenovo S-12 netbook?
Update and another question The 800 and 900 series with 4.4.35 kernel boot on this computer. mini-initrd greatly speeds up boot. Fatdog 902 xorg 21.1.11, cannot set screen to native resolution, looks ragged. No openchrome driver? Fatdog 813 xorg 1.20.14 uses 1280x800, looks great I really like the ...

Re: How to boot 902 in Lenovo S-12 netbook?
Hello p310don, You're right, the humongous initrd is super slow. I'm using the mini initrd (fd64.sfs moved outside of initrd). The nano initrd freezes: "You can only use this initrd if ... your hardware is supported by the kernel without any additional modules." (from the faqs) When the boot hangs ...

Re: How to boot 902 in Lenovo S-12 netbook?
Thanks for the replies. @Clarity The computer has 3GB of ram. I see you plan to remove the system drive...Why? Because it will be a travel computer which might get lost. With only a 16GB flash drive and save on encrypted partition, I wouldn't have to worry about data. The HDD is years in use ...

How to boot 902 in Lenovo S-12 netbook? (solved)
I am trying to rehabilitate an old netbook, a Lenovo S-12, details below. I used this computer for years with Fatdog 710 which still works great, but it is aging and I’m concerned about security, particularly the browser. Firefox 50.1 is currently installed. 902 (iso burned to a flash drive) boots a ...

Re: Fatdog64-901 Final [10 Oct 2023]
@fatdoguser I'm using VirtualBox 7.0.14-2, booting Fatdog from the iso. I don't find any vbox shortcuts using the win key. In the vm, win- e, t, k and s work normally but win-g locks it up every time. I should add that my computer locked up requiring a hard restart while doing other things in the FD ...

Re: Fatdog64-901 Final [10 Oct 2023]
Hi fatdoguser, thanks for the reply. You're probably right that it's a peculiarity of my vm, but I thought I should let you know about it. In FD901 vm, if I run "open-spot-home" from a terminal, it works as expected. Win-g works as expected in FD901 when booted from a flash drive, and in a FD721 vm ...

Re: Fatdog64-901 Final [10 Oct 2023]
Hello, I'm trying out FD 901 in a vm. It looks fantastic, congratulations and thanks! I think I found a bug: in the primer for puppy users, it says to press window key and g to see Spot's home, so I tried it. It set off a "fork bomb" and the vm had to be shut down. I checked, I don't have a stuck ...

qpdf --encrypt
Hello, I use qpdf to encrypt pdfs for the cloud. I recently found out I had been making a serious mistake. Since I wasn't interested in restricting permissions, I left the owner password blank. The qpdf dev says that a PDF file with a blank owner password "can be trivially decrypted." So for ...
