mikewalsh i think the problem was all the versions of puppy linux older than slacko 8.2.1, at the time, had an old enough kernal that it didn't include the firmware for my monitor or something.

Element made menu listings in both Internet and Network. It works from both listings, and people say it's nice to have options, so it's not really a problem, but it's the first time I've seen a program do that, so maybe worth a mention.
