Thanks for suggestion Magic. The proc/cpuinfo shows pae flag present. I run all the old bangers clocked, but unclocked a XP2200+ - no change. Use a third party BIOS on most machines but, although pae is not featured as such, I can run most stuff like Devuan, Mint18.1 as well as most other Pup ...
