Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

Anybody remember ZIF hard drives? I was looking at that Dell D430 and couldnt find the hard drive, knew it had one. I was looking for standard 2.5inch drive. ZIF drives were smaller. Finally watched some video on replacing the hard drive on a D430 and dang its a ZIF.. ZIF is a mini variant of PATA. ...

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

Who knew, they made chromebooks with i3 and i5 processors. Though at least the earlier ones still had soldered RAM and fixed eMMC. And an insane price new for what they were. Some now EOL and actually pretty reasonable. As long as there is a mrchromebox bios for them.

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

I would be very cautious with cheap aftermarket batteries. Best to keep a fire extinguisher handy. Some apparently had NEW computer with NEW battery get mighty warm. I think its just more likely on cheapo, cause you know if they can only afford 16GB or 32GB eMMC, they sure didnt go all out to sourc...

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

Hmm, guess price of batteries for that first generation Stream has come down, used to be $40 to $50 which was nuts. Just looked, the one for the 13inch is now $15 and the one for the 11.6inch is $25.... Hmm, you know never thought, wonder what best way to dispose of the old battery, does anybody rec...

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

@mouldy Interesting video, many of these innovating hacks are done in countries that don't have the abundance of tech that we have in this county. They find ways to refurb and repurpose what's available. Thanks wizard Yep, necessity is mother of invention, I grew up on small farm in very different ...

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

I am getting more into this than I intended. But yea the little Dell with BookwormPup is quite nice. Seriously using an nvme ssd really makes it usable. However I revisited a video I had seen of somebody doing this to one of those first generation HP Stream 13. The ones with 2GB RAM and the "BI...

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

@mouldy Your Dell 3120 shows it has a Intel N2840 dual core. Passmark v9=970. It's about on par with my Lenovo 100s-ibr that has the Intel N3050 dual core. Passmark v9=874. Mine is adequate, but maxes out quickly on internet video streams. Should be fun though. My easiest Linux installs on Chromebo...

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

Ok, added BookwormPup to the NVMe. Puppy is quite happy here. Interesting. This is chromebook celeron "Candy" board. Old slow and not well supported. Just used for couple models of chromebook apparently. However there are windows 10 drivers for it, that dont work in win11. So no sound or t...

Playing some more with the NVMe. Installed winXlite "micro11" and cinnamon MINT. Both more responsive than you would expect. More so than on the internal eMMC or external usb SSD.

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

Ok, must been little bored. I installed VOID linux on the new SSD. Yea even though the ssd is bit limited in speed due to using the wifi socket, its faster than the eMMC. VOID responded quite nicely. Suppose I should installed Ubuntu or something bit more of a challenge for the former chromebook.

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

This isnt a chromebook/cloudbook, but it shows the principle of the thing and this guy takes his time, no rush-rush like some of the videos. And you see how tight space can be. Amazingly the bios in this series computers had no problem seeing and booting from SSD installed this way. No rEFInd neede...

Re: Yet another reason not to use Windoze

This is the SSE4.2 instructions, the same requirement 64bit android has. I ran into this with Waydroid (and PrimeOS, BlissOS and Android x86). But seriously if you have older hardware that currently you forced win11 onto, use 23H2 when its absolutely necessary to use windows, its not like lot of win...

Re: Where can I find FBReader 2.0.x for Puppy? Anyone?

Like I said the msix is some goofy new windows thing. Unarchive it, copy the files and folders to a new directory. Now dig down, lets see \VFS\ProgramFilesX64\FBReader.org%20Limited\FBReader\FBReader.exe\ Then with WINE installed double click on FBReader.exe. It will immediately open FBReader if eve...

MPXY found a newer version in an appimage. try it, might be close to what you are looking for. But it isnt 2.0. I downloaded the windows version 2.x. Double click and it installs and opens on "micro11". Great... But will it work in WINE. My newest WINE is on a MINT 21.3 (or whatever it is)...

Re: FBReader for Puppy anyone?

There are several linux epub readers. Though one might look at Calibre, you can call the reader portion of it without opening the whole app. Its really clumsy if you just want to read a book and whole app opens, but you can use just the reader part of it and its very configurable. Its probably the b...

Just a long time Puppy user here from when Puppy was in alpha (<1.0) and nowhere near usable for daily driver. Yea small is nice but worrying about a cd when a blank dvd usually cheaper (supply and demand) isnt very pertinent. The only practical need for ultra small iso is for people with either a very slow connection or very limited data. Hard to believe but last I looked there are still 1million dialup cus...

Yep, trying to install anything but Puppy-like system (or live installer) to flashdrive not great results. Ventoy can do this also. This link shows three methods the first, win2usb is restricted in free version, then rufus, then ventoy. I have never tried the ventoy method. There may also be some older version win2usb floating around, they didnt used to restrict the free version that much. And you could ...

Windows 10 loses support in 2025 so not far down the road. I rarely use it except to run yearly tax software. Again this year tried tax software in WINE.
