Tried all that eventually after Tring lots of different linux, I got linux mint to install and boot.
Will try to install puppy again and see if it will boot as a second os

Thanks for that Fred. That was the major part of the problem. It didn't boot from the menu entry but did boot from the Find Grub2 entry. Its is working now, must have been a bad download of the iso i used to install
