Re: CrowdStrike Outage Explained

Great video. Thanks for posting.

I wonder why CrowdStrike didn't do an incremental rollout (since their code was not defending against a zero day exploit).

And why they would roll it out on a Friday, when their engineers will be off for the weekend when it hits.

Seems to me the entire debacle ...

Thank you all for the good advice. I will try Bigpup's good suggestions.

Also thanks for the advice about VGA and HDMI being similar.

Cheers.

Re: Damn Small Linux is back!

I agree, to me it makes more sense just to go directly to antiX and use it. Or if you have to go smaller with the download or disk space for installing, use Puppy.

It's cool if DSL-2024 comes out as another option, but I just don't see it getting wide use compared to established distros that ...

Re: Damn Small Linux is back!

If I read the DSL justification correctly, it seems the reason he gives for a DSL revival is that he wants a distro to fix on a 700 meg CD.

To me, that's not a compelling reason. Only really old computers depend on CDs ... even computers up to 20 years old have a DVD that holds 4.7 gig.

Not to ...

Should I get a new Monitor ?

My display is like maybe 12 or 15 years old.

It's a Samsung 22" 1920 x 1280 (16:9) 60hz connected by VGA.

I'm wondering, if I bought one of those new sub $100 monitors from Amazon, would it give me a sharper display? Crisper text?

Even if I stuck with VGA? Or would I need to switch to HDMI make a ...

Re: Why I like Seamonkey and how I use it

Seamonkey fills a couple gaps other browsers ignore (like its Composer editor, as @Trapster notes). There aren't many wysiwyg html editors around that are not specifically focused on html coders.

Also, it's really useful to have several different browsers installed. There are those cases where a ...

I agree with @vtpup, too. Well said. Puppy's diversity is its strength. Different users will naturally favor different versions depending on their needs. Hopefully the article reflects this attitude. There's room for folks who use all different Puppies for their different needs and purposes.

@mikesir -- I agree that a better way to indicate supported Puppies is in order. The goal should be to point a person new to Puppy to the most current releases.

I remember around 2000 when some websites claimed they would only work with IE.

Then that monopoly broke, and they had to support Firefox, too.

And now the OP notes that some are back to "monopoly thinking" with Chrome.

Ugh!!

Hi Wizard,

Yeah, from what I hear from friends, they say that most Win 8 and earlier computers can run Windows 11. But around here, at least, it seems a lot of people and small businesses are tossing them as insufficient for Win 11.

Maybe it's cause the original Win 11 requirements were more ...

Visit your local e-dump!

Many cities and towns in the U.S. run "electronics recycling" facilities.

Depending on where you live, they often let you sift through the stuff being tossed and take an item or two.

Wow, that's a tough one.

All I can think of is....

1. Try a different OS on the affected machine, just to see if you get the same problem
2. Check the video driver
3. Switch between Xorg and Xvesa when booting Puppy, and also different screen resolutions, to see if that fixes it. I've run across ...

Thanks for the link to that article.

In the past we've always been immune. But I have to wonder... with malware being so renumerative for the bad guys, it's probably only a matter of time before they target even the few percent of us who use linux. I sure hope not.

I know DOS was still used until just a few years ago by some vendors as a bootable operating system for UEFI/BIOS updates. But now even linux will fit on a usb so it's fallen by the wayside for that use.
