Re: Technical Differences in Printing Labels - LibreOffice vs PDF

Are you making a run back to the shop for more labels, just to be sure that this all works? ;)

Re: Technical Differences in Printing Labels - LibreOffice vs PDF

You can probably just use: pdftoppm -png xxx.pdf label
That would make the set of PNG files named label-1.png, label-2.png ...
Then print them with: lpr -P LABEL label*.png

Re: Technical Differences in Printing Labels - LibreOffice vs PDF

Excellent. I had forgotten that pdftoppm could also generate PNG files. Although I don't understand why you need the find command. The advantage of this method is that it bypasses the gstoraster/pdftoraster filters that handled the PDF file inside CUPS and might have been the problem. Instead, it us...

Re: Technical Differences in Printing Labels - LibreOffice vs PDF

p310don Here is a thought - convert the PDF to a PNG graphic and send that to the printer. You can do the conversion in two steps. pdftoppm aaa.pdf bbb pnmtopng bbb-1.ppm > ccc-1.png Then print the PNG from the command line through the Zebra CUPS filter with lpr -P LABEL ccc-1.png Make sure that th...

With that in mind do you still hold the opinion that

In the end, using a USB drive may still be the simplest solution.

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

The primary market for Chromebooks has always been schools. The last thing that school boards want is a machine that can be pried open by kids and stripped of any removable parts. The more stuff you can solder down the better. What hobbyists may eventually do with the used machines is not a big conc...

@rcrsn51 You said Then why mess with XP at all if you aren't using it for anything but secure backup of Puppy files. I didn't say that, so I guess that's a rhetorical question. That's precisely why I wanted you to answer those questions. Until you explained how this XP machine was being used, any d...

Re: Technical Differences in Printing Labels - LibreOffice vs PDF

I just tried installing ghostscript in FD, didn't make any difference to printing success for PDFs. Some other changes to the CUPS config would be necessary. I just tried LO writer with just a few words. It has the same result as a PDF through Draw. Prints, but sideways. Is that in Fatdog or Puppy?...

I understand your logic. A crisis plan is in place for such an eventuality.

Then why mess with XP at all if you aren't using it for anything but secure backup of Puppy files. Remove the XP hard drive and convert it into an external USB drive.

Re: Technical Differences in Printing Methods - LibreOffice vs PDF

That's good news. How did you perform the successful print jobs? From the command line? From a browser? From LO? IIRC, the Fatdog developers made a decision to replace Ghostscript with a different tool that does the rasterization - turns the PDF into a bitmap. Maybe that's the source of the problem....

Re: Is there an easy way to transfer files from PC A to PC B on the same network?

No answer needs to be given. With all due respect, it does. Are you simply using the XP machine as a "secure" place to backup important files? If so, I would recommend against this. If/when this old machine eventually dies, you lose everything. If XP won't boot, you have no access to the ...

Re: Puppy Linux on a old Netbook Hasee SD - Card

Booting from SD cards has always been unreliable.

1. Boot from the Ventoy USB again and check the SD card. Is it detected as a USB or an EMMC device?

2. Can you find the missing menu.lst file on the SD card?

Re: Technical Differences in Printing Methods - LibreOffice vs PDF

When you load a PDF label into LO, does it open in Write or Draw? I wonder if the chinese-vs-genuine issue has something to do with the amount of on-board memory in the units. A ZPL file is a set of instructions for how to create and print the label. CUPS sends the file directly to the printer whose...

@Chelsea80: Dual booting the XP machine will introduce a new set of problems, like how will you safely insert the downloaded files into the XP filesystem without corrupting it.

You never answered my set of questions above.

Re: Technical Differences in Printing Methods - LibreOffice vs PDF

The driver I am using is the Zebra ZPL driver. That is obviously for Zebra printers. This printer is identified in CUPS as 4BARCODE 4B-2054L. I haven't had success in finding a working linux driver specifically for it. Are you talking about the filter built into CUPS? The one that CUPS would automa...

When you installed Windows, were there problems getting it onto the nvme drive and not overwriting your main hard drive? Did Windows also put its own bootloader stuff on the nvme? Typically, the Windows installer would then put an entry in the UEFI firmware boot order list to launch Windows. Did thi...

1. Does a Windows computer have the same problem as Puppy with dropouts/reconnections?

2. Your Verizon router may have a setting that makes it display the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands with different names. That might help things.

Just to be clear, "5G" refers to the fifth generation of wireless cellular technology. This is the signal between a transmission tower and a cellphone. Don't confuse this with the 5GHz frequency band used by the wifi computer equipment inside your house.

Even if powerwashing reset the BIOS, it wouldn't be a big job to restore the SeaBIOS. And none of that would affect the stuff on your USB/SD drives.

Re: Transfers within Lan

Various solutions were proposed. Some of which can be applied without regard to what operating systems the computers run.

If you are just transferring files between Puppies, all you need is gnetcat. Remove the fake .gz extension.

The only dependency is lzop which is already in some Puppies.
