Re: How to connect Dell G3 5000 laptop to the Internet?

Had a quick look at the kernels in Puppy and it will be worth trying the latest Fatdog with a later kernel and Fatdog is one of the Puppy family. https://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/ By way of an explanation in Linux all the necessary drivers (thousands of them) are compiled in the kernel so that ...

Re: How to connect Dell G3 5000 laptop to the Internet?

Follow advice given above. Did read in another forum that the WiFi card is an Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9462 wifi card and will need a later kernel than the one in that Fossa. Not sure if that is the case with your laptop.

Re: Looking to install Puppy Linux 32bit on an old computer

"Can you please tell me how can i add archived repos" Sorry, had a quick search of the Ubuntu repositories and decided I was not sure where they have moved them to and what they had done with them. If you do identify them then you can add repositories in the Puppy Package Manager (PPM). Getting the ...

Re: Looking to install Puppy Linux 32bit on an old computer

And I noticed Peabee has been making 32 bit variants: https://github.com/peabee/releases/releases/ Click Assets to see iso file. However, I have not yet tried them. Puppy is designed to run from a USB stick and it works fine with that. You can also do a frugal or a full install to a hard drive and I ...

mikesir. Your comments reminded me that many years ago I used a laptop with a Broadcom WiFi card and to get that working I used to copy the firmware from a Ubuntu laptop into the Puppy installation and it used to work from then on as the firmware was then in the save file.

I can't quite see why this would happen but some people have had problems with WiFi on that model of laptop with Windows 10 after upgrading from Windows 8.1 and at one reported success after updating the BIOS. So, whilst I can't see why upgrading the BIOS to the latest will affect matters it would ...

Re: Hang during boot setting up network service (Asus X205T netbook)

When you say it hangs "during boot setting up network services" do you mean that it has never boots to the desktop or do you mean that after setting up the network with one of the network connection programmes it hangs trying to make the connection? I have never had a computer "hang" during the boot ...

The Puppies are booting on the Windows XP PC? If so you will see icons with the Windows XP installation and clicking on those icons will mount them so that you can navigate to the files you want to copy and you then click and drag the files to where you want them. Or am I missing something?

Re: Booting Puppy from USB

i agree that booting from a USB was always easy and remains so, as far as I know, using the Puppy tools. I especially like that I can easily do a UEFI/Legacy boot USB. However, whilst Ventoy always worked for Puppies I did get failures on some more recent ones and just put it down to whatever and ...

It is a difficult situation. As I see it your older Brother having retired is entering a new phase of his life and searching for his role in it. Re: Connecting to the Internet Slacko v7.0

Yes. It maybe possible to swap out kernels and Slacko 7 may work. These days people are not investing huge efforts into developing and maintaining 32 bit Distros as laptops with those CPUs are at least 12 years old. As time goes by useful 32 bit Distros will become rare. It will be best if users ...

Re: Connecting to the Internet Slacko v7.0

It seems that there was a bug in the 32 bit Slacko 7 kernel that caused that atheros chip not to work with it. To find out this I googled the dmesg line, "New USB device found, idVendor=0cf3, idProduct=9271" which lead me to the Archlinux forum which often has useful information: https://bbs ...

Re: Connecting to the Internet Slacko v7.0

Lets see if Slacko recognises your USB device using "dmesg" which is a list of all the devices and actions that Slacko has taken to get working. So first of all open a terminal and type "dmesg" without the quotes. Unplug your USB WiFi device and plug it in again and again type "dmesg". At the end of ...

When selecting preferences CUPs default is letter size and you need to set it to A4. Make sure that you cancel all the jobs before you try that setting.

Re: How to create a bootable windows installation USB from puppy linux ?

OK. Your PC is not that old. You have to try something. Sometimes a USB make doesn't play ball and in cases such as yours it is wise to try another USB make. Repeat the process that I used to create the USB stick and see it that works. If it doesn't I am out of ideas.

Re: How to create a bootable windows installation USB from puppy linux ?

Is your old PC 32 bit one or a 64 bit? ./VentoyGUI.x86_64 is for 64 bit PCs. There is a VentoyGUI.i386 for 32 bit PCs. If you followed my example I think Ventoy will sort itself out and the default is that secure boot is disabled.

If you prepared the Ventoy USB stick then just copy your iso's to the large exfat partition and then safely remove USB stick. Pop the Ventoy USB stick into the PC that you want to do the installation on and select that to boot from.

With Linux you can download a Windows iso and when you do so you get the choice of which version you want. (Windows home or Pro). You select the one you have a licence for. In the kernel line of the boot menu after the Puppy reference add "mem=1950" without the quotes. It will use this to boot but will use the full RAM when booted as I understand it.
