Scope of apt and dpkg
So, on my Chromebook, in the Crostini layer with Debian Bookworm, after the ChromeOS update that is roughly every four weeks, I am used to doing "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" to update the system, excluding appimages and flatpaks. Would that mean the same commands sans sudo will work to ...

Re: How to get more packages?
As just a user, not a programmer, I too was interested in getting access to more packages. Assuming the package I wanted was not available from the Scarthgap repository, a flatpak in the Flapi list of packages or as one of the Appimages listed in Appi, the answer I found was: Update the four package ...

Re: How to get more packages?
About Windows, it's not quite true. It's only because Windows allows a program to install its version of any dependencies inside the program folder to supersede the OS versions that it seems simple. Essentially in Linux, a program could not require a more recent version of C and other libraries than ...

Whither EasyOS?
From reading the blog, it appears that EasyOS is maturing and a new project could be taking over. IMHO, it would still be worthwhile to devise some mechanism to allow any flatpak to be installed. I am not a programmer so have no idea what that entails. I wouldn't be surprised if it was infeasible. I ...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series version 6.3.1 and Guix
I looked over at some of the packages available from Guix and IMHO it will not replace flapi. For instance, from Guix, the LibreOffice version is 7.6.7.2, while from flatpak, a user can download the latest version with about one or two weeks' delay, currently version 24.8.1.2 (there was a change in ...

Re: ChromeOS
I am aware of sideloading .deb files. I have sideloaded Google Chrome on.the Flip and symphytum on both Chromebooks. Sideloading does work with multiple containers.

My Use Case, Basically Crostini
I have two Chromebooks (and an old Thinkpad that I run two versions of EasyOS: pyro with old 32-bit WINE in a Buster container and the other with the latest version of EasyOS, Scarthgap). One Chromebook is an old Asus Flip with 64GB storage at End of Life (EOL), i.e., no more ChromeOS updates, but ...

Re: ChromeOS
I use ChromeOS with Debian Bullseye Linux on Crostini and Android apps installed - I have two Chromebooks, an Asus Flip C302CA not officially getting ChromeOS updates but I have a separate Chrome browser (LaCros) still being updated and a second Lenovo Flex 5i Chromebook with updates until June 2030 ...
