Also, it should probably be noted that you can always change the desktop wallpaper.

Re: Best Japanese IME (text entry) for FossaPup?

But I'm already not using a save file. 8-) I used FrugalPup Installer to set everything up, and it's also supposed to do all the work for me if I want to set up a dual-boot with more than one Puppy. bigpup recommended it to me (with reference to this and this ). As I mentioned, though, I think I'm g...

Re: Best Japanese IME (text entry) for FossaPup?

But I don't have a save file. :) I'd either have to add it as an option to the boot list, or - worst-case scenario - reformat the drive and start over, for it to be the only/primary OS. I'll keep it in mind as an option, but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle just so I can natively enter Japanese. :|

Re: Best Japanese IME (text entry) for FossaPup?

Oh, I agree (that it shouldn't be breaking anything). I'm just confused as to why .xinitrc is showing up as blank, when it doesn't seem to actually be empty, that's all. I can't back up the save file this time around, though... when I decided to try FossaPup, I also decided to replace the system har...

Curious: Would HTTPS have any safety?

The forum's already using HTTPS. But that doesn't help against a DDoS attack, which is primarily bogging a server down with way too much traffic/connection requests to handle.

Re: Best Japanese IME (text entry) for FossaPup?

What I was saying, is that /root/.xinitrc showed up as completely blank when I tried to edit it. I then tried adding the lines and rebooting anyway, and that's when FossaPup just kept crashing to the command line on boot.

Re: Best Japanese IME (text entry) for FossaPup?

Sorry - ended up being busy pretty much the entire weekend. :( Edit There is a pet package to japanize fossapup64. It is a package which I made before making a japanized iso. fossa64_lang_ja-r6a.pet https://sakurapup.com/forum1/viewtopic.php?p=27138#p27138 If you unpack the pet package, you will fin...

Re: Best Japanese IME (text entry) for FossaPup?

For now, I'd rather just install an IME myself. Even if it's probably more trouble than it's worth. :)

I'm currently using an old Win9X-era Japanese text editor through WINE for the purpose. Works okay, but it's a bit of a clunky process.

Best Japanese IME (text entry) for FossaPup?

I'm mainly just looking to be able to enter Japanese in my browsers, text editors, email, etc., at the moment. What would be the best/easiest/simplest setup to install? I can't recall what I was using under a special Japanese build of Puppy 4.3.1. I've seen (recent?) posts where people are swearing ...

Re: Getting a card reader to work [Solved?]

I'm marking this with "Solved?" for the time being. It does appear that the reader will work properly under a more recent version of the kernel (at least 5.4.X?), but I haven't tested that with BionicPup, to be sure. I've since switched to FossaPup, where the reader does work as expected.

Re: Getting a card reader to work

I don't have any spare USB flash drives around to test. Even then, I'd prefer to have an SSD if I was going to start booting Puppy from USB. 8-) Meanwhile, I've had the ISO for FossaPup 64 9.5 sitting on my tower downstairs for a couple weeks or so, so I decided to burn a CD today and test it. In Fo...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

bigpup, I'm running from a savefile. bionicpup64save-<username>.4fs at the root of the system's hard drive. The ONLY time I use the CD is to boot to Puppy rather than Windows. What I mentioned before, is that traditionally, every time I test a new version of Puppy, I'll boot from the new Live CD - a...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

I've always set up frugal installs alongside Windows in the root of my Windows system drives (C:) So is this a frugal install done by using the Lick installer program? Not to my knowledge. I'll test the CD to see if everything works, and if it does, then I'll start setting up the savefile while in ...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

I've always set up frugal installs alongside Windows in the root of my Windows system drives (C:), so these days, it would be on an NTFS drive. Maybe that has something to do with it? Re: Getting a card reader to work

I decided to try huge-5.14.1-bionicpup64.tar.bz2, from the archive first, since it's already set up for BionicPup.

But running change_kernels throws this error:

Does it not work with frugal installs, or does it think I'm running a full install?

Re: Getting a card reader to work

Doesn't changing the kernel run the risk of breaking something, though? I recall reading something a while back that said it risked breaking a few things, like anything compiled against the kernel, and probably shouldn't be done unless it was necessary. Would it hurt to go with one of the most recen...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

The icon doesn't go away. That's why at one point (when I'd booted with the card inserted?) I could click on the icon and get it to recognize the card again even though I'd unmounted and removed the SD card. The icon only goes away if the drive icons are refreshed, or (apparently, now) if I click on...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

I think it was a one-time thing - although I haven't tried booting again with an SD card inserted in the reader. The system hasn't acted up again given time and the few reboots I've done since then. You have to do this correctly as it says. Do a normal boot with no SD card in the reader. Run the com...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

I thought that was the case, and I did originally try it with sdd and sdd1 in place of device , but it didn't work - probably because it didn't specify the directory to mount to? mount -o ro /dev/sdd1 /mnt/flash Issuing that command worked after inserting a card (though only sdd is referenced in dme...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

What is the exact make and model of the computer? I want to look at the bios setup and see if there are any settings for the card reader. It's an HP Pavillion a6847c, I think. Re: Getting a card reader to work

Because it's a kludge, not a solution. And I don't want to leave anything sticking out of the tower - it's almost at floor level, and the pets might get at it if I leave anything inserted... they broke a flash drive halfway at the plug, once. For this reader, about 75% of the SD card remains stickin...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

It works without issue under Windows (but then, it's a Windows OEM (HP) tower). I haven't tried any other distros with the tower, just Precise (Puppy) and XenialPup.

As far as I know, I should be running the default kernel for BionicPup 64 8.0. uname -r returns "4.19.23".

If I boot with a card inserted, it shows up on the desktop as USB drive "sdd1." However, if I unmount it and refresh, it disappears and the system goes back to pretending it doesn't recognize the reader. According to the var/log/messages excerpt above, the system appears to be designating ...

Re: Getting a card reader to work

It's working just enough for the system to see it as an attached mass storage device and assign drive names to it. Beyond that... I would've been happy to continue using my 'flash drive' card reader, if it hadn't decided to fail. It turned a simple file move operation (to the 16GB card) into a 90+ m...

No, I'm only working with a 16GB card and a 32GB card at the moment, so probably FAT32 at worst. Getting a card reader to work [Solved?]

BionicPup 64 (v8) I have a memory card reader that's 'built-in' to the tower I'm using BionicPup on (a Windows OEM tower). It works fine under Windows, but so far has been unresponsive under BionicPup - it doesn't detect when I insert or remove an SD card, and doesn't show up as a mountable drive if...
