Please migrate #puppylinux users to Libera Chat.

Post by snoring_cat »

Many Puppies have Hexchat set up to use Freenode as the default server, autoconnecting to the #puppylinux channel. Is there any way we can have the IRC channel moderator redirect all Puppy users to switch to Libera Chat's #puppylinux channel. Most old school #puppylinux users already have switched over, and some new. It would really help the Puppy Linux community to consolidate to Libera.

@snoring_cat is Libera Chat different from Librenet in the network list? I have only seen the default.

Yes, Libera Chat is different. Libera Chat just came online this year, and most people jumped ship from FreeNode to Libera Chat.

When I ran Hex last night there were about 8 users on our channel. How does one switch to Libera Chat?

1 Go to Network List
2 Add a new IRC network
3 Set up the Network as shown
(optional: Add #puppylinux and other channels to "Autojoin Channels" tab)

Re: HexChat as root system name calling

Post by JASpup »

1st go it called me stupid running as root (I am in a puplet where it is not installed). Then I ran as Spot and received this error:

Code: Select all

* Looking up irc.libera.chat
* Connecting to irc.libera.chat (51.161.82.214:6697)
* * Certification info:

*   Issuer:

*     O=Let's Encrypt

* * Cipher info:

Maybe Spot is the reason?

HI JASpup,

Your, "unable to get local issuer certificate" error message usually has to do with ca-certs package, or something similar. What Puppy Linux version are you running?

I am running Hexchat 2.14.3 as root on FossaPup64 without connectivity issues.

The quoted feedback is in X-Tahr 2.0 (Tahr 6.0.5).

I connected in Hirsute and Xenial easily.

It reads there are 32 active users in #puppylinux. You just joined and someone just quit, but no messages yet.

JASPup, I'll download X-Tahr and test out. In the meantime, if you do get into Libera Chat, please message me in #puppylinux channel. Maybe no one was writing messages at the time you connected. It's quiet in there right now

I've been playing around with Tahr64 6.0.5 and can't connect to Libera Chat via Hexchat either. At first I thought it had to do with certs or ca-certs. It might have to do with an old version of Hexchat.

Is anyone the moderator for Freenode #puppylinux? If someone is able to update the channel Login Message to request users to migrate to Libera Chat, I will work on figuring out what is the cause on Tahr.

I would be interested to read your impressions. It is still a strong candidate for lightweight browsing.

IRC overall is still a bit technical/esoteric, but there are enough Puppy users on the Libera channel that it could be useful.

Just my two cents worth. I bypass the hexchat issues by using the web version of LIbera Chat.

https://web.libera.chat

Then enter your previous ID and plug in #puppylinux

Interesting. If it's good I would consider skipping Hex, but the Hex interface appears rich in information. I just heard Opera has a builtin IRC feature as well.

ndujoe2,

I like the web solution, and that it can address migration issues of this topic. Now only if a Freenode #puppylinux moderator can change the channel login message to say something like:

This #puppylinux channel is being migrated from being hosted here on FreeNode. Please update your IRC client to use the server irc.libera.chat and channel #puppylinux. If your IRC client has issues connecting to Libera Chat's servers, please use their web interface at https://web.libera.chat

JASpup, I have downloaded your X-Tahr build, and will private message you after I've used it a while.

Part of your Dillo project I liked is streaming videos, especially in this era of no audio in Firefox and browser bloat. I have yet to stream Youtube through a media player. Like Tahr JWM, X-Tahr has VLC builtin.

I never could get a hold of #puppylinux FreeNode moderator for them to update the login message. If anyone can get a hold of one, can you please refer them to this topic. Thanks.

Chatzilla in Seamonkey has been migrated, but there are 2 channels. 6667 and 6697. If you use cz, be sure to use the 6697. I have both it and hex setup tho I never see anyone on. 😝

HexChat version 2.16.0 was released on 01st October 2021
Previous release was 2.14.3 from December 2019 so almost 2 years have elapsed
New version has updated server list including Libera.Chat
Along with other fixes and improvements of course

I compiled the source code of 2.16.0 in FossaPup (uses meson and ninja for building).
Folks may wish to give it a TEST run
http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/hexchat- ... -fossa.pet
It should connect you to BOTH puppylinux channels automatically
Libera.Chat and also Freenode

Note - The python plugin is included but disabled because of a missing dependency
If you really do wish to enable it:-
Install python3-cffi-backend via Puppy Package Manager
Enter /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/hexchat/plugins
Rename python.so.bak to python.so (remove the ".bak" suffix)
