Problem installing Libreoffice sfs, F96-CE (Resolved)

Post by vtpup »

F-96 CE rev 4
Huge kernel: huge-6.1.8-fossapup64 from https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linux_Huge-Kernels
Windows 11
HP Envy Laptop 17t-cr100
Puppy savefile (1.8 GiB free)

Libreffice-7.5.9_64_en-US_xz.sfs

For some reason I don't understand, I can't install LibreOffice via Bootmanager, or by clicking on the file and answering the prompts.

I obtained the sfs in the first place by clicking the "Get Libre Office" button in Menu>Document. This seemed to automatically download a .deb, then convert that into an .sfs file. Location is in /mnt/home. As far as I can tell, everything is normal for how I've loaded .sfs files for years. Yet though BootManager says it is successful, and shows it loaded, there is no LibreOffice folder in /opt (as there should be), and no program.

I've tried multiple times uninstalling it through BootManager, saving, shutting down and rebooting. To clean everything out. Then re-installing it using BootManager or other means.

I've tried also installing a different version found in the Fossapup Ibiblio repository -- this other version is LibreOffice-6.4.4_64_en-GB_xz.sfs . But it also shows the same behavior??!

I have a Kdenlive.sfs in /mnt/home, and I can mount that normally through BootManager.

I'm really confused by this! Help would be appreciated.

I wonder if it's related to the xz compression of those two LibreOffice sfs? The Kdenlive sfs, which installed okay isn't an xz type (I believe).

I tried it in my install of F96-CE_4 which is using the original Linux kernel.

Used Get Libreoffice
It downloaded, made the SFS package, and loaded it with no issues.
Clicking on main menu >Documents ->LibreOffice 7.5 runs OK.
The sfs it made should be in /mnt/home location.

Do not know how much memory computer has.
So are you choosing to do process in memory?
Choosing no should make it do it by using the computers drive.

Maybe something with the kernel you are using.
Compiling a kernel and getting the correct kernel config setup, is a black art!
Maybe something not correctly configured in this kernel you are using.

I use menu ->Setup -> SFS-load to load and unload the SFS's.

This one also works OK for me in my install of stock F96-CE_4

Thanks Bigpup. I decided to reboot clean by temporarily housing my savefile in a subdirectory of the frugal install, and restarting FP64-CE. The kernel changes are still in place, but the savefile created is new.

First thing i did after rebooting with the new savefile was to add LibreOffice and that proceeded without a hitch. So there is something wrong with my original savefile. Which is good to know, but unfortunate because of all the work I put into it over the last week. But at least I know the kernel change wasn't the cause, and I know what to do now to get things back on track.

You could boot using the old save.

Try running LibreOffice from the terminal and see if it provides any messages.

That maybe will tell you what is wrong.

this in a terminal will start the loaded LibreOffice-7.5.9_64_en-US_xz.sfs.

Code: Select all

libreoffice7.5

Other versions will probably run from terminal using their version numbers.

Thanks BigPup, unfortunately bigger problems have surfaced for me in other areas for the F96-CE installation having to do with Wine and Sketchup in Wine. I will open a separate thread for that, but it is beginning to look like I may not be able to use F96-CE at all. Not absolutely sure about that yet, I need to do more testing. If I can still use it, I'll try the terminal LibreOffice troubleshoot.
