Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

The X server is part of the booting process. I cannot be 100% sure that it's related to the kernel version. But: - it happens only when using either Scarthgap or Quantum Vis (which uses Void packages), and they both have kernel 6.x - I can repeat the experiment as many times as needed, and every tim...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

I'm having problems with both Scarthgap and Quantum Vis : all EasyOS versions based on Kernel 6.x. And the problem is a very sneaky one: the system boots up, but it does not continue to boot: it can boot only twice. At the 3rd boot the X server does not launch (it does not matter what I do) and does...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

The laptop has been purchased on the 21st of June 2021. It's an Asus Zenbook UX325EA with Intel Tiger Lake (11th gen.) architechture and Intel Iris Xe video chip. It should be quite common nowadays. As far as my modest opinion may matter, I think that what's important is that there are no difference...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

I retried to boot the system with the SanDisk Ultra and, as expected, the X server did not start: Screenshot(13).jpg Afterwards, I rechecked the stick with fsck from EasyOS Kirkstone and it looks OK ( clean ). There is no damage / data corruption onto the drive. It looks to work fine physically. Sti...

First of all, I connected the stick to a second port and checked it (brand new SanDisk Ultra ) on EasyOS Kirkstone through fsck : # blkid /dev/sdb1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" UUID="7982-9D4D" BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="fe5f3c11-01" /dev/sdb2: LABE...

EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

Sorry for being late, I wanted to watch the race. So, I tried again to boot with my older 32 GB Lexar drive. Screenshot(12).jpg I tried to issue the suggested commands, and this is the subsequent output: Screenshot(11).jpg as you can see, no sdb2 partition is being detected at all, there is only zra...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

OK people, I'm unhappy and also a little bit frustrated to communicate that the problem reappeared identical exactly at the third reboot, even by using this brand new stick. Now I have to verify if the stick is still fully functional (I hope so). But anyway, all these issues did never occur when usi...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

@Federico , EasyDD also reports actual write speed which is a nice way of evaluating USB quality Thank you for the tip. I will try the program. I will tell you all something: low-level-formatting a flash drive is also a way to check its physical integrity. Normally, if a drive is broken / defective...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

Of course I only low-level-formatted it because I thought that something was not OK with the drive (or was left badly written onto the drive). Or, it's the same, to make 100% sure that the transcription of the image onto the drive through USB Image Tool would have been done correctly. Anyway, I just...

Thank you so much Barry! I will try those commands at the prompt on the older stick as soon as possible. The flash memory technology is not meant for hosting operating systems. Its correct usage would be theoretically just to store data of some kind, not be run operating systems on. Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

Thank you very much. This is interesting. Probably there is a minimum read / write speed problem when using USB flash memories. This would explain what I'm experiencing with the Lexar stick, which is in fact dated (although it used to work for testing in the past). Now I'm trying to low level format...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

So, I tried to write the Easy Scarthgap image on an older 32 GB Lexar USB stick and it never booted. I reformatted this stick several times and always got the s...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

On my laptop the integrated touchpad did break, so I decided to disable it inside the BIOS and remove it physically from the chassis (to save weight and improve cooling), since I basically do not use it (only work with mouse). Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

I will have to do further testing.
As already said, it could be just related to my video chip (or other piece of hardware).
By the way: I've also set a file system encryption password.
Anyway, I will install it on another stick, so that we can exclude further possible causes, and I'll report back.

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

If I reinstall the Scarthgap image onto the USB stick from scratch I regain the ability to boot the system, but just for a couple of times. So I assume that the stick is OK, and that either: - the kernel is buggy or: - the driver is buggy or: - the shutdown routine makes something wrong Most probabl...

You are using a video card of the '90s. Have you already tried with another video driver? I mainly use virtio on my VMs.

Code: Select all

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

I confirm that the CPU runs slightly hotter on Kirkstone with the kernel 5.15.158. It's 4 °C hotter when idling (42 °C instead of 38 °C). It's not the world, but it for sure results in better battery life. So I found that Scarthgap is slightly faster, slightly more efficient and includes updated sof...

Re: EasyOS Scarthgap-series 6.0-RC1

Greetings, Barry!
Thank you very much for this new version.
The black-blueish theme with the picture from the surface of another planet is the one I prefer.

Short question: is it possible to update to Scarthgap from Kirkstone 5.8.3?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Can't boot from USB, partition not found

It's quite annoying that the manufacturers don't publish complete data sheets. There's basically no way to know the maximum power draw of the stick. The power draw is not constant. Exactly like for HDDs and SSDs, the fact that it "works" does not mean that it can work in every possible sit...

Re: Can't boot from USB, partition not found

Please check the USB ports of the PC. The maximum current which the ports can handle may give problems. Refer to the following table: USB 1.X --> max current is 100 mA = 0.1 A = 0.5 Watts @ 5 Volts USB 2.x --> max current is 500 mA = 0.5 A = 2.5 Watts @ 5 Volts USB 3.x --> max current is 900 mA = 0....

Yes, in fact the picture I sent in my previous post is wrong, and shows exactly just a USB3-SATA adapter cable. What I meant is something like this . Long story short: something which connects to 2 USB ports on the PC and to the given enclosure. There are enclosures around which also provide an own ...

Re: External drive caddy for 2 1/2 inch HDDs plugs into USB port.

This argumentation is not completely correct from a technical standpoint: in no way you can overload a USB port. The port will simply not supply a greater current than its allowed maximum. The risk is not to overload the port, but not to supply the HDD with the power it requires, resulting in physic...

Re: How to go into developer mode in chromebook with bad keyboard?

For going into developer mode just once, you most probably just need to connect an external Mac type USB keyboard. Some keyboards come in 2 flavours: PC and Mac (like the famous Logitech MX Keys for example). Obviously this could also be a permanent solution in case you plan to use the laptop as a d...

Re: How to use easyos in qemu without vmware driver?

Please, refine your english, because what you mean can only be interpreted. To install EasyOS itself on a QEmu virtual machine looks to be an interesting topic. I don't know if it's even possible at the moment, but I think that this thread should be anyway moved to the Containers and VMs section.
