Re: Here are some very loose results with various browsers on Bookworm64

If you're just reading that RAM usage from the on screen Conky it may not be accurate. When I first tried Bookworm in it's early days I also thought the RAM usage when in an idle state was excessive, so I queried it.

Re: Lowest RAM and CPU puppy?

In my day to day use of Bookworm64, it seems with the Floorp browser, total ram use averages around 3GB give or take. I'm not familiar with the Floorp browser, but 3Gb RAM use seems a bit excessive. Could just be me though. I see a lot of cheap computers with around 2-4GB of RAM and curious how wel...

Re: Can files be transferred from an ext4 drive to a FAT32 drive without file corruption?

Next question: Can a FAT32 partition be converted to ext4 without losing files? No. When you change the format of a partition it wipes it clean, so deletes anything that's there. So, the problems I experienced must be related to executibles that can't handle FAT32, or apps that can't handle spaces ...

Re: Can files be transferred from an ext4 drive to a FAT32 drive without file corruption?

I've copied many files (music, videos, documents, etc) from various Linux systems, which would all have been either Ext3 or Ext4, to Fat32 USB sticks without any problems of file corruption. Also copied them to a FAT32 portable hard drive without issue. Copied them other way as well, Fat32 to Linux ...

Re: Is there an easy way to transfer files from PC A to PC B on the same network?

I have all my files (documents, photos, music, videos and a few other bits) all backed up on a portable hard drive. Then I just plug the drive into whichever PC I want to put the files on. Simple, no messing around with LAN's, routers, ethernet, or anything else. I assume we all have the sense to ke...

Re: Dual Boot Puppy with other Linux

@dancytron

Yes I already have a couple of frugal installed Puppies, but I think you've misunderstood my question. So let me put it this way.

Imagine I've got a hard drive with nothing on it. Then I want to put, for example, MX Linux and Fossapup both on the same drive. Where do I start?

Dual Boot Puppy with other Linux

I did a search for this as I thought someone's bound to have asked it before. Unfortunately I didn't find much and what I did find went straight over my head. So apologies if I've been looking for wrong thing or in wrong place. So, my question. What is the simplest way to have a frugally installed P...

Re: GRUB4DOS Strange Behaviour

Heh. I hope you didn't copy rockedge's boot stanza literally .....then try to boot from it. It won't work like that; lines 3 and 4 show "Studiopup_ 1137 -3.3" .....when it SHOULD be:- "Studiopup_ 1337 -3.3" Mike. :o Thanks Mike but I had already spotted that. Thought per...

Re: GRUB4DOS Strange Behaviour

Just had another thought about this issue. Looks to me as though we're trying to solve the problem? Wouldn't it be better to try and establish the root cause of the problem? That is, why on earth is GRUB4DOS recognising it as a full install in the first place?

GRUB4DOS Strange Behaviour

Having read mikewalsh 's glowing praise of Studio 13.37 in another thread, and having a particular interest in audio stuff, I decided to give it a spin. I don't know whether it's my hardware or just me but I continue to use Fossa 9.5 simply because I don't get any of the problems I experience in newer Puppies. I've tried quite a few newer Puppies and often get issues with the initial boot, some take ages and one or two won't boot at all. Never had t...

Re: New computer will not boot 32bit Puppy versions

I don't need a 32bit OS as all my machines are 64bit, but I like to keep an eye on what's available for 32bit. There are a couple of reasons for this, firstly I might need 32bit one day. I know for a fact that a family member still has an old XP laptop from about 2005, which I know is 32bit, tucked ...

Re: How to free up some space on USB stick? (Solved)

I really have to study the update code in the initrd. It is supposed to delete old sfs files older than the depth value (5). I presume in your case there were lots of old easy_*.sfs files? If they got left behind, they are big and can chew up lots of drive space. So yeah, what you did is ok. Deleti...

Re: How to free up some space on USB stick?

I suggest that you run Gdmap (in the Filesystem menu) on the working-partition, get a picture where all the space is getting taken up. Have you installed flatpaks? They can take up a lot of space. Ran Gdmap but couldn't make sense of it I'm afraid. Think I need some more education with that. No fla...

How to free up some space on USB stick? (Solved)

I installed Easy on a USB stick a while ago, initially just to play around and try things out. Since then I've updated it whenever updates have become available. However, it appears there is insufficient space left on the USB for any further updates. I looked into this a bit further, and it transpir...

If someone is going to add Bookworm64 to puppylinux.com perhaps they could update one or two other things while they're at it, such as, under Puppy Linux Advantage: 2. Ease of use - Grandpa friendly certified. Not convinced everyone would agree with that. 3. Relatively small size - 300Mb or less. Er...

Haven't got round to doing the grub.config thing yet, but I have found something else. Had the chance to try VanillaDPup in a 3rd laptop, and also tried booting it in my little netbook. In both cases it booted fine with no delays. So out of 4 machines only one has an issue with Vanilla. I also fishe...
