Re: Trimming Large Firmware Collection to Create fdrv SFS

If you want to write a new 'fdrv trimmer' that's better than kernel-kit's one, I recommend testing on a >= Skylake laptop, especially with an AMD or NVIDIA GPU. The missing firmware is often SOF (audio) firmware that's required since Skylake AFAIK, WiFi firmware (>=802.11ac) or GPU firmware.

X thinks the monitor is still turned on, in my case. Question was if the display visibly turns off or not. Does it? Where did you find what X "thinks"? The panel and some windows are still on the laptop monitor, which is turned off, and the window manager still allows me to move windows t...

Re: BookwormPup: how to prevent suspend when laptop lid closed? (Solved)

I've been following this discussion though I don't use external displays and my Fujitsu S761 and S762 laptops all do turn off the display on lid close. We all agree that the display turns off automatically when the system is suspended. But the new code has nothing to do with suspend - it turns off ...

Re: BookwormPup: how to prevent suspend when laptop lid closed? (Solved)

MochiMoppel At least on my displays, they don't turn off on lid close (unless the system is suspended). This is handled in software, something needs to disable the display (so X moves windows away from it) and turn it off (so no backlight, heat and power drain) while the system keeps running. You c...

Re: Intel N100 processor UHD core graphics card driver compatibility is poor

BookwormPup64 is probably the only 'mainstream' Puppy that's new enough for this device. Others have an old kernel (which is swappable) but also old Mesa, and you need both to be new enough.

Re: DistroWatch needs a newer Puppy version listed for Puppy Linux!!!!!

I never really understood this WAR on systemD. There is an apparent hatred that I cant get my head around. It is not perfect, but so is what is currently used. Debian works either way, correct? "War" is a big word for a software compatibility issue. Puppy uses busybox init and not systemd...

See viewtopic.php?t=9113, it sacrifices everything possible including hardware support and performance for smaller size.

For AppImages to work, you probably need to install libfuse2.

Re: Trimming Large Firmware Collection to Create fdrv SFS

The so-called 'trimming' in firmware_picker.sh is very problematic. Some drivers don't use a hardcoded, constant name like x.bin that appears in a firmware: line in modinfo output, but $something.bin (and format x or y into this template at runtime). firmware_picker.sh doesn't handle these cases cor...

Re: DistroWatch needs a newer Puppy version listed for Puppy Linux!!!!!

IMO Ubuntu-based Puppy is no longer a good option. Ubuntu is systemd-only (some packages don't work in Puppy), with Wayland as default (X.Org is on the way out), with many packages replaced with snaps (snap depends on systemd), with narrower hardware support compared to Debian (Canonical is consider...

Just wish it had a more "meaningful" name...............

It's just as meaningful as "S15Pup", if not more :)

I see it depends on systemd and NetworkManager, two things you don't have in Puppy. Re: Boot BW64 from NVME drive in PCIe adapter fails

I recommend that you don't use Ventoy, it's built from a big stack of outdated (some patched) components. If it works, it can work for the wrong reasons, and if it doesn't work, your time is better spent on isolating the issue in the kernel or the boot loader. Nobody is working on improved Ventoy su...

Re: Boot BW64 from NVME drive in PCIe adapter fails

@wizard I'm not sure if there's any missing driver: as far as I see, all required drivers are built-in to the kernel (and nvme0 is detected before init is started, at a very early stage). Can you share the GRUB configuration file?

If you boot BookwormPup64 from a flash drive, does it recognize the drive? Or, is there any distro that boots fine from this drive?

Please share the output of these commands from any distro, where the drive is recognized (not necessarily at boot time):

Code: Select all

lsmod
lspci
dmesg
fdisk -l

If the build process is aut...

The contents of SFSs? You can view their contents just like any other SFS.

One thing I did notice is that the initrd has a different extension in the latest build ie zst instead of gz.

Don't take initrd.zst from there! It won't work with 10.0.x.

Take only vmlinuz, ucode.cpio, fdrv and zdrv.

Vanilladpup is configured for Debian The opposite, it's the Debian kernel - it's built from the Debian kernel source as-is, without big patches like aufs, inside a clean Debian container with Debian's GCC, etc'. Re: Changing/swapping kernels?

It is possible to swap the kernel (as long as fdrv and zdrv are usrmerge-adjusted), but kernels are easy to misconfigure (missing drivers, bad defaults, settings that make more sense for servers rather than PCs, etc') so expect varying quality. Kernel configuration files are ~10k lines, and that mea...
