Re: mergelayers - merge sfs files and directories into sfs file

For several months now, I have only been using ZSTD. Is it possible to change this? I prefer xz, I do some quite large merges with this, and I'm prepared to wait longer for the smaller size. So it would have to be an extra parameter of some sort. I'll have to think on the "how". Hmmm.., m...

Re: SAVESPEC - a SAVEMARK file on steriods - MakeSAVESPEC 7

I've uploaded 'mk-savespec-7.sfs' and 'MakeSAVESPEC_AppDir-7.tar.gz' to http://www.mediafire.com/folder/ufo1lerdg73j0/savespec.

This version is purely to add some comments to the gnerated SAVESPEC file, as suggested by @Clarity .
But my comments are not the same as @Clarity's.

Re: BookwormPup64 10.0.5

I've never commented on this in the past, but I've noticed various confusing comments related to the above in the past. Some posts seemed to suggest Puppy save persistence worked as long as their was an external file, which Puppy calls SAVESPEC, but elsewhere I've read (from gyrog himself, though I...

Booting ISO files - how Puppy supports it

The classic way: Burn the ISO file to a CD, and boot the CD or 'dd' the ISO file to a usb stick, and boot the usb stick. This uses the boot loader contained in the ISO, so you don't need to know anything about what you are booting. Puppy has always supported this. It does not activate the '/sbin/is...

Re: grub2 v2.06 version upgrade to v2.12

GRUB2 has matured to version 2.12. Is it time to present to WoofCE the upgrade? Yes, this has been true since 2.6 first appeared. But who is going to do it? I did not produce the signed grub2 2.03, that is still standard in Puppy. This grub2 2.06 is unsigned and "borrowed" from debian. So...

Re: Booting Puppy ISO files, enhanced loopback.cfg, utility to do it

This works great with fresh puppies but I'm having trub with legacy puppies as the system is unable to find the main sfs after loading the initrd. Still trying to work out why. something must be hard coded in the init of legacy puppies. For many years Puppies have named their main .sfs file 'puppy_...

Is it possible to add a time/date string to the saved file?

Yes.
It would require changes to 'savesesion-archive' and the 'init' script.
I'll put it on my toto list.

I suspect that this is an obsolete link, anyway.
If you accept the risk and go to the site, you end up with a:

I confim that no matter how you create an fsiPup, if you convert it back to an ffiPup root, the ffiPup will not boot. For the next release I propose: There will be no conversion like utilites. ffiman: will have the "Create an 'fsiPup' sfs file from root directory" item removed. fsiman: wil...

I'm starting to like "fsiPup". I have an "fsiPup" of Bookwormpup64 installed on my SSD, but the save location is on a fat32 partition with a bit of space. This means it runs in pupmode=66, but that's not a problem, because the save contains nothing of value, just the files Puppy ...

Re: SAVESPEC - a SAVEMARK file on steriods - MakeSAVESPEC 6

Clarity Yes it should, but I've never done it. The 'init' script does not process a SAVESPEC line by line, it "includes" the whole file, i.e ". /path/to/SAVESPEC". So it is treated as extra script code, therefore scripting rules apply. The variables SS_ID, SS_DIR, and SS_MEDIA, ...

'lenovo-kernel-6.1.69d.tar' is compiled in woof-ce by the same mechanism used to produce the kernel for Bookworm64. So this is what we can expect if/when Bookworm64 10.0.5 is released.
